That “notch” on some spool edges

#1

Post by TytLynz2U2 »

This may have been covered here before, but I can’t find the answer.
Some reel spools have a half-moon shaped notch cut into the edge of the inside face - see photo. I have seen it on Hardy Marquis and JLH spools and also Young Jubilee spools. Anybody know what they are there for?
Thanks!

If you have your rod stung up and need to take the spool off that notch will allow the line to be pass the outer rim. I has come in handy on several occasions.

Thanks LP.
I can see how the notch would allow a “strung” spool to slide past a closed cage/frame, but I wonder why I haven’t seen notched spools for other closed-cage Hardy’s and Youngs like LRH’s, Princesses, Beaudexes, etc. Are the notches only useful on palmable closed-cage reels like the Marquis, JLH and Jubilee? Maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough?
