This may have been covered here before, but I can’t find the answer.
Some reel spools have a half-moon shaped notch cut into the edge of the inside face - see photo. I have seen it on Hardy Marquis and JLH spools and also Young Jubilee spools. Anybody know what they are there for?
Thanks!

#2If you have your rod stung up and need to take the spool off that notch will allow the line to be pass the outer rim. I has come in handy on several occasions.

#3Thanks LP.
I can see how the notch would allow a “strung” spool to slide past a closed cage/frame, but I wonder why I haven’t seen notched spools for other closed-cage Hardy’s and Youngs like LRH’s, Princesses, Beaudexes, etc. Are the notches only useful on palmable closed-cage reels like the Marquis, JLH and Jubilee? Maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough?
