Face plate hole patterns

Which reel are you a sucker for that face plate hole pattern ?

Mine would have to be this one, the Orvis CFO :

The face plate is the handle side... the holes are to vent the fly line...

What is one of your favorites ?

Why?! Why do you make us choose?! I love 'em all. In all seriousness, if I had the skills and machines to build my own reels I would use a cross between the Gem and the Medalist for my inspiration and give them modern innards. I would probably still be a sucker for CFO's and the St. George, though.

I am a bit partial to the design of the San Miguel faceplate- the 1st two reels in this lineup.

I think that "the teardrop" pattern on Hardy Bouglé Agate and Hardy Bouglé Lightweight are one of the nicer spool-patterns on more modern classic fly reels. Hardy Bouglé Agate and Lightweight I and II were made for the Japanese market in 2002 and Hardy Bouglé Agate and Lightweight III were sold worldwide 2004-2006. Good hunting!

…. I like the inscribed lines through the holes of most of the William Dingley reels:

… and the Allcock‘s Marvel is different, too:

Not on the 'face plate' but the rear of the spool/ drum- I asked reel-maker Wayne Petrevan for a specific hole size and pattern, when he made my 4" plate wind complete with 1912 check..

In haste I forgot the most iconic hole pattern of all. Hopefully someone will post a pic of an original. Here is a repro that looks pretty nice

Bogdans. I've always liked the look of four rings of holes, with the third ring holes smaller than the other three.

If you are like me - they all tickle your fancy!

Four rows of holes on the elegant Abel TR3 - and still learning angles

Image

Image

Oval holes and just plain strange - an Andy Ramish prototype

Image

I am a complete sucker for this face plate hole pattern - the Cortland Embassy

Image

Two different but similar patterns - two familiar spools.
A Hardy knock off clone spool and the real deal.
Can you tell which is the Hardy ?

I didn't know that my fancy had any places left to tickle, but I'm all in on some of the latest ones.

Some nice Abels out there too. I like the way the porting extends through the arbor of the spool.
