Does anyone know what years Winston offered the 8'3" 5wt (weight unknown)? Thanks in advance.

Jerry Kustich of Winston built a prototype # 1996-005 "JCK" of the rod above. the rod is medium-fast and weighs 4.60oz. The only people who could answer your question if went into production is Glenn Brackett and Winston.

I read an article where Glenn stated something to the affect that although rods were cataloged in 6" increments they made them in 3" increments all the time when people ordered directly with the shop. Not sure if that answers your question.

Thank you, Dennis and Joep. I just saw a reference on another site that leads me to believe it was available as a special order. Not sure if it was exclusively a special order or if there was a time when it was a usual listing. Appreciate the feedback.

I own an 8'3", 2/2, 4 1/8 (4.125) ounce, 5WT., Brackett built Winston. I do not believe I have ever seen it in a catalog and assumed it was a special order, one off, kind of build out of the former shop.

Hi Dennis, as you likely saw that 2/1 1996 built rod is in the archives of Spinozarods (which includes Gary Siemer’s past sales) if anyone wants to take a look for curiosity it is readily available to view on their site. Also in their listings is an 8 foot 3 inch 3/2 6 wt which was won in a “ cast a Winston “ contest.

The rod weight on Carl's rod doesn't include reel seat wood insert whereas on Adrien's post it does include it. Tapers are determined by blank weight not including reel seat.

The weight I noted is the weight Winston wrote on the rod. When speaking to Winston rods this written weight is what most persons refer to.

What was the weight written on the rod described in the original post?

You didn't specifically ask this, but I have a Tom Morgan Rodsmiths 8'3"-5-weight and love it....
