#6He's a real character. Great sense of humor. Never changed his approach, which is circa 1959. Fishes a one-piece Vince Cumming fiberglass rod. Check out the book--you can get it on online used bookstores--"Secrets of the Fishing Pros." It has a photo of the flies Ed ties. Best Zug Bug you ever saw. Best adams, of course, best royal coachman and leadwing coachman. I use a lot more flies and do modern ties with parachute hackle and cdc. But Ed, in his old ways, is still top rod in the Catskills.

#7A really nice visual piece for sure...
I first met Ed in 1970, while fishing the Willowemoc No Kill section on Opening Day... A buddy and I drove up from NJ and despite cold water temps, we both caught trout on our reliable Cooper Bugs... I also fell in, holding my brand new Orvis Superfine cane rod above my head so it wouldn’t get wet or damaged... Ed checked our out-of-state fishing licenses and said he was trying to catch a poacher... a day I'll always remember...
Below is a photo of Ed and Judy from a 2015 Catskill Fly Tyers Guild event, where Ed shared his words of wisdom, both gracious as always...

#9Well deserved admiration - of course, he did not mention that he had so much to do with the increased public access in the Catskills. Just low key quality, steadfast resolve and an individual who is respected by so, so many...
Enjoyed seeing the Cummings glass rod that is dear to his heart - remember Mr. Van Put talking of perfect May days in the Catskills, just swinging wets...Bet that is his special spring companion...
Thank you for the post - very fine interview and the pics are special.

I wrote to Ed three decades ago, asking for a sample adams, as I wanted to tie them correctly. He sent three.
Great guy. By the way, that old captain has a lovely wife.
