Granger 9652 - 9653

#1

Post by ozarkwater »

Have not really found a lot of info on this topic. Probably there...but here goes.

For those of you who have or have had a Granger 9652 or a 9653 what lines did you find best for it? What were those rod's ferrule sizes? And, lastly what type of action would you say they had?

I have seen #5 and #6 lines mentioned. And a slower action.

Thank you - in advance.

I have both rods and the 9652 is a 6 wt for me and flexing into the butt and the 9653 is a 7 wt. In fact I can't tell any difference in the 9653 and 9660.

If not too much trouble, ferrule sizes? Just when you can.

The 9652 has 18/64 and 12/64 ferrules. The tube is not labelled so I assume it is a 9652. The 9653 is in a labelled tube and both are Specials. The 9652 has a coke bottle grip.

Yes, the 9652 has 18/12 ferrules and the 9653 has 19/13. If your 9652 has an uplocking reel seat, then it should weigh around 6.1 or 6.2 ounces. If it's an earlier sliding band rod, it should weigh closer to 5.5oz.

The 9652 is described as a "long trout" taper in the catalogs. I have fished my GF9652 Favorite with 6wt modern (WF) or silk (DT) lines. Of course, it will do other things, but if you like swinging wet flies, it's an ideal setup.

Here's the 9652 Favorite for reference:

The 9653 loads better with a 7 or 8wt line. This configuration is often seen in Tournament rods. The 9653 should weigh close to 5.75oz with a sliding band reel seat and around 6.3 to 6.4oz with the unlocking.

I've fished a 9652 with a DT 6 wt line and it cast nicely.

Well saga continues. Rod is not in hand right now. Out for an inspection. Should be back before week's end. Took it down prior to shipping and had it weighed on the Post Office scales. 5.9 something and 6.0 ounces on two tries.

My question is...it has that short Coke bottle grip. How common was that?

I ran my micrometer on it and came up with 18.85 and 12.99 on the ferrules.

Hesitant to really line up and give it a good casting session as the mid female ferrule is definitely lose.

Rod has some cool history original owner aged 104 is still around in WA. Great nephew was the seller. Paid $50 for it. So, has some room for refurb in the budget.

FWIW, I agree. For me the rare 9652 is a long 6 wt. trout rod whereas the 9653 is a heavy trout, bass or light salmon rod.

My rod has the coke bottle handle and a uplocking Pat. Pend. reel seat. I weighed my rod on a postal scale and it is 5.2 oz.

Well removed the wraps today. Stress relief. Always good to play.

There are several spots where the original pencil marks for guide placement on this rod are still there 8)

Unfortunately the single intermediate - half way point of the butt section the standard three pieces each side are not...gold but are...Snappy Green! with the Chinese Red main wrap.
