Orvis Rod Question

#1

Post by Skinnypig »

Hello All,
A young man came into my shop wanting to find info on a rod his grandfather owned.

On the reel seat it is stamped " C.F Orivs
Manchester, VT
Patent June 6th 1882"
It is a three piece rod, on the mid-section has the number "746" can not find that number anywhere else on rod.
Tip Section Measures 29"
Mid. 28.5"
Butt 29.75"

It has one missing guide on tip section and one missing on mid. section.
It is in pretty bad shape, it is prob a 2-3 on the scale.

Any help would be appreciated, Thank-You

Thanks for posting the rod.
The rod was made in Manchester Vermont sometime after 1898 and probably closer to and before 1915. The rod has been broken, cut down and repaired on all three sections. These sections would have been typically 37". This is probably the reason the sn 746 has missing on the tip and butt. The SN would have been on the butt near the female ferrule, the mid and tip would have had the sn near the male ferrules. There would have been two tips of equal length with the rod as well. The tip top is not original. It's hard to tell in the images, but the mid female ferrule may not be original either.
The young man may want to clean it up and keep it for a connection to the past. There's not a lot of value in the remaining parts and pieces.
