The 1960 Orvis Catalog

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Thank for your efforts Greg! These catalogs are the best!

Before color photographs in the days of black and white 1960 - mesmerizing!
Those putters really helped the company during a rough patch, is what I have read.

The Special Saltwater selection of reels... priceless.

I have copies of 1957, 1963, 1967 - 1987, 1988, 1991, 1993-1996, 1998 - 2002, 2004 -2007, 2012 so far if you're missing any of those.

Thanks for posting this. I was 10 years old in 1960 and I remember these catalogs arriving in our mailbox. Even at this early age I lusted after nice tackle to be the same world as my dad, Uncles and Grandfather.

Thank you for the kind words guys. I'm going to add catalogs from every other year as time allows.

G-man, I've owned the 1960 catalog for many years. I'm missing the 1947 and 1951 issues. The former is near unobtainable and I've only seen a few of the latter.

Gotcha...there was a beautiful 1960 example that sold over the weekend so I thought maybe you got it. There's a 47 and 51 with your name out there somewhere!

I've seen a single 1947 for sale so I'm not optimistic. It was on eBay in about 2006. IIRC, there was talk on the forum that Orvis bought it for a display in the new flagship store. The information in this catalog is important to me as Orvis was hitting it's stride after WWII and there were significant annual changes. There're major differences between the 1946 and 1948 catalogs.

A few 1951 issues have appeared over the years and I'll probably be able to find one. I have partial scans. However, it probably has little information that isn't in the 1950 & 1952 catalogs. Wish I'd paid Gary Siemer the $120 he was asking for this one:
