Scott bamboo fly rod?

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Scott bamboo fly rod?

#1

Post by trouterbass »

Yesterday I got a look at a bamboo rod. The only marking on it was “Scott” in script on the cane above the grip. It was 8 1/2 ft 3/2. Looked like good canework but was made with fiberglass ferrules and some sort of plastic reel seat. I was Wondering if Scott made blanks for sale? Sorry no photos.

A picture would tell more than 1000 words.
My guess would be a Wojnicki

It’s not from a blank. Wojnicki most likely I ahree. I’ve never seen one with a plastic seat. Could be a replacement.

To put a finer point on it - imagine trying to provide information or an appraisal on just about anything solely on a few word description. Bummer you didn’t snap a pic when you looked at it.

I may get another look at it. The guy doesn’t want much money for it but it is broken off at the butt female ferrule. If it looks like it might be a legit Scott rod I might buy it anyway. If so will post pics. Thanks for your input.

So, assuming it is a Scott, is it worth restoring with a butt section likely 2 inches short, and new ferrules required? The guy wants $120 for it. It is 8.5 3/2. Appreciate any thoughts.

We still need some pictures to be sure it's a Scott (Wojnicki).
It could just as well be a 'wall hanger' and for that could get a South Bend or any other cheap bamboo for around $25...

The butt would likely need to be re-built to make it right and bring it back to full value so you are looking at hundreds of dollars and not 100% sure if the work could be done at the factory. Start by asking Scott what they would charge. The rod when done would be worth maybe $1,500 so could definitely be worth it. These are all hypotheticals without pics - sorry to be a broken record about that. Also you would probably be looking at a minimum of several months for the repair to get done.

IMHO: At most, $25 without confirming Scott provenance. No more markings?

Like looking at old rods around here.

Pretty sure a guy named "Scott" built it. The odds of it being a beat up Wojnicki are next to none. $25 sounds about right.

There’s a Weber Jock Scott on the auction site that matches the OP’s description. Not THE Scott we all think of first.

Finally got to take photos. Note Scott signature above the grip. Also note the butt broken off at the ferrule. Also the mid at butt end was whittled down to accept undersize ferrule. Maybe the tips are original. Obviously even if Scott not worth much.

I think it's an HI . By the way, Mario made rods for Scott in more fish-able lengths than 8 1/2' . I think the longest in the series was 7'-10".

Fishable lengths? Mine are 8' to 9'6". 2 and 3 piece. I do have a Sage 4711 LL but that is my "short rod" and not bamboo as the rest are.
My 8-1/2' rods are my favorites and I fish smaller to medium sized waters here in Central NY State.
