Re: Are you left or right handed ?
#21I cast right and prefer to reel left. Have historically been reeling right until not too long ago as do to availability in the reels I like and that was how I was taught. So stuck in both worlds depending on the vintage of reel I want to use, which I believe a lot of us can relate to.
Over the last few years I bucked the system, ponied up, and changed all my ocean fishing reels over to the proper left hand wind for one predominantly holding their rod in their right hand while jigging. It was at considerable expense I might add, but would be a small sum compared to a fly fisherman trying to go down the line of vintage Hardy offerings say pre 1940 in LHW.

#22Right-handed. I cast right-handed reel left-handed. I golf right-handed but switch hit a baseball.

#23Right cast, right wind. I’m from saltwater background, can’t wind nearly fast enough with left hand to handle some of those species.

#24I'm right-handed and reel with my left. Never made sense to me why switching hands was a good idea.

Re: Are you left or right handed ?
#25I'm right handed, cast with my right hand and reel with my right hand. Because that's the way God and mr Hardy intended it.
If I where to go "modern" and reel with the left hand, I wouldn't have any use for all those vintage reels..
Almost all vintage reels are rhw because they where made for right handed people.
On occasion when I pick up a friends rod to try it out. I find it terribly awkward to reel with my left ( almost all people are winding with their left hand today)
That being said, I have no problem winding left handed with a spinning rod..... Hmm

#28I'm very left-handed, my right arm and hand are just there to make me stand up straight. And wind the reel on occasion.

#29Cast right reel left. Not because of his preference but Lee Wulff cast right reeled left. He returned a Bogdan back to Stan because it was RHW and he preferred LHW.
Re: Are you left or right handed ?
#30Left handed. Cast left, reel right.
Also, may catch a fish occasionally. On a good day…

#31I’m a lefty. Rod in left , reel right handed. That’s how the muscle memory has been for me for close to 60 years. Can’t reel very well at all with my so-called strong left hand. So I don’t have to pass the rod back-and-forth between hands.
IMO it’s all about the muscle memory that you’ve set.
If we only had one coordinated hand, no one would play the guitar very well. And speaking of guitars, although I’m left-handed (throw the ball and write with my left) I play “right handed”, fretting with my left, picking with my right (just like Duane Allman & Mark Knopfler—the only commonality there )

Re: Are you left or right handed ?
#33I'm right handed, I can cast left but usually cast right handed. I reel right hand because when I began fly fishing it seems everything was default RHW. I have tried to switch, but my right hand cannot level wind, so I remain a right handed winder. I never think about moving the rod to my left, it just happens naturally.

#34I should have had a choice of - AMBIDEXTRIOUS.
At this past CRR - I had the opportunity to cast many rods.
Often I would pick up a rod and try it with my Right - just to see how user friendly it was.
That is tricky - because every rod was near better than the next or last - dangerous territory.
Not a LEFTY in this group.
Say Hi Jay!

#36Dual Line Guard 1592 - quite rare / few ever made
What an example - to be used both LEFT and RIGHT handed.

#38That reel makes me want to cut off my left hand!
Best heirloom ever! Thank you, Brian.
By most accounts, with a large enough sample size, the poll should produce about 7% LH; Interesting... keeping it visible.

Re: Are you left or right handed ?
#40Right handed, reel with right coz my reels are vintage (and if a modern CFO or Featherweight I switch them to right).Brian K. Shaffer wrote: ↑08/23/22 17:4260 day POLL - Are you left or right handed ?
Follow up question - Do you wind with your left or right hand ?

Being a left handed guy myself - I cast left and reel right handed.
