Surf rod Spinning Tapers

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Hi Guys, Herter's Rod Building Manual has a 9 1/2' Surf Rod, 2 ppc. Hollow butt, with 30" turned wooden handle.
end .456, 6" .450, 1' .346, 1 1/2 .346, 2' .333, 2 1/2 .318, 3' .300, 3 1/2 .283, 4' .265, 4 1/2 .240, 5 .243, 5 1/2 .225, 6' .200, 6 1/2 .180, 7' 2" .164, 21/64 tip top
There is also a Tournment Surf Casting Taper with a 40-45" turned wood handle and a 9 foot tip section. It calls for a 15/64" butt ferrule, but that can't be right, it has to be a 30/64's. I can post the taper, but that's a loooong tip section.

Edit: The measurements are for a strip, so twice the given spec.

Hi Guys, Here we go:

end .469, 6" .450, 1' .427, 1 1/2' .415, 2' .403, 2 1/2' .390, 3' .376, 3 1/2' .362, 4' .347, 4 1/2' .332, 5' .317, 5 1/2' .301, 6' .285, 6 1/2' .268, 7' .251,
7 1/2' .234, 8' .218, 8 1/2' .203, 9' .188

Whoa, hold the phone! The measurements are for one strip, so the rod diameter for these surf rods is twice the given measurement. All the bamboo rods in the Herter's rod building guide are that way.

You've got to be kidding me! A rod (surf rod, any rod) with a tip diameter of 0.376 inch? And a butt diameter of wellnigh an inch? Can't really picture this...

Hi Guys, Me neither, but that's the Herter's for ya...... Many of the other tapers in the book, and there are a lot of tapers, are quite more normal and quite interesting. Many, or even most are named tapers.

Edit: The tapers are on 6" centers. There are 5 and 6 strip tapers. There are a lot of bait casting tapers, also some spinning rod, and boat rod tapers.

WOW!I just looked at this! With a piece of bamboo of that size the tip section could double as a wading staff!

Hi Guys, There are a lot of tapers in the book, 29 fly rod tapers, a dozen bait casters, boat rods, spinning pier. A rod is mentioned made by Lew Stoner that set a distance record of 660 feet. Pretty cool book. There is another Herters book from 1950; 'Fly Tyers- Rod Builders Materials and Tools that has culms, planing form the Compton binder Jungle Cock, Condor, etc., etc. It's also a pretty cool book..........
