The Abbey

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

To my old eyes, beautifully done but would look better barbless

I don't know if the Flies forum is my most or least favorite one. I look at flies like this, by some very talented tiers, then I look at my own pitiful efforts, and don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Flyrodman: I only use vintage hooks for the traditional Catskill flies. These old hooks have insane huge barbs indeed

Henk tying flies is not to catch fish but an alternative to grabbing booz and wrecking a marriage. You should know that by now! :D

Yep, and trying to crush barb means they won't bent down but break and brittle hooks often the whole point at the bend. For classic looks and true to pattern those hooks are great but you just can't mess with the barb. Use barbless or newer mini-barb hooks for your fishing flies. The mini-barbs bend down and disappear quite easily in the vise.

Beautiful tie. Too nice to fish anyway.
