South Bend 1122 repair....

#1

Post by GANGGREEN »

I just posted a thread/photo of an 1133 that I'd like to switch from RHW to LHW and coincidentally, a South Bend 1122 that I have also stopped working this last week. It no longer clicks when you pull line off the spool, nor does it click or really even operate properly when you wind the line in. I'm guessing that there's something wrong with the pawl and how it's being held in by the spring, but I've really never worked on fly reels and don't really know if that IS the issue or how to address it if it is. Any suggestions on what's wrong or what the fix may be. I have very little in the reel and a spare spool that are in like new condition, so if it never works again, I'm not out a fortune, but it's a rather neat little reel for the right rod and I'd love to be able to fix it.

Nobody's got an idea why this doesn't work? It's such an easy mechanism that it can really only be a couple of things. Either the pawl has loosened up and isn't being held firmly in the reel case or the spring that controls the pawl is too weak or too strong. It worked perfectly for a year or so and then stopped working all at once. I have almost nothing in the reel or the spare spool, both of which are in great condition, but I'd love to give it to my son for the PHY Perfectionist that I'm building him and I'd even be willing to ship it somewhere and have it repaired at cost if anyone knows where to send it or if any board member is able and willing to fix it for me. Thoughts?

The pawl is so far out of alignment, it doesn't look like it engages the grear at all. Try carefully bending the right side(in the photo) of the spring till it realigns. You may have a cracked spring that needs replacement.
Good luck.

OK, so I gently bent that spring and the reel is working now. Seems like that would have weakened the spring though and I'm hopeful that it's not just a temporary fix. Thanks a ton though, it's really appreciated.

If so, these are readily available for small money on eBay.

I'd gladly buy one or two just in case, but did a quick search on eBay and didn't find any. Any idea what they'd be called or how to find one?

Measure the diameter of the spring and distance between the rivets. I may have a spring of that size.

Looks like about 22mm to the outside of the spring at the widest point and maybe 8.5mm from the center of each rivet. I'd gladly pay what you want for the spring, plus shipping if you have one. What about the rivets? Assuming I pop them out, do I just try to find a small brass screw that will fit and then peen it from the inside? I've never been very handy with metals and I'm certainly no machinist.

If it doesn't rain too much today, I may hit the stream and give that reel a go to see if it's going to continue working for any length of time.

*South Bend 1122* There are about 20 of them on eBay right now. They range from $15-$25.

Oh, understood. I thought you meant the small springs were readily available. Yeah, I've seen plenty of the 1122s available, thanks.

Checked the three loose caliper springs I have and all are a bit too small.

When all is said and done, you’ll have more money and effort in it than it’s worth. It was their beginner’s reel, and to attach it to a decent rod is senseless.
I look forward to responses. Please follow forum guidelines when posting them!

Thanks for checking. Regarding the reel, I know that it's not a better reel, but I like it and it looks cool on one of my rods so I'll keep fishing it until it pukes.
