Re: Rod ID
#4Thanks for the reply crowebeetle. That is what I thought all along. The reason for thinking trade rod is the reel seat is not marked. In Michael Sinclair's Heddon book it shows a "Favorite" model that was sold by J.S.Johnson.

Re: Rod ID
#8So does the hand writing on the rod offer a clue ? Maybe someone added it. It could be one of those rods we will never know who made it. Thanks for the replies.

#12On post #219 of "Show us your Edwards family rods" their is a pic of an Armax rod with what appears to be this reel seat. Any chance of a Winchester connection to this rod ? Early trade rod ?

Re: Rod ID
#13How long is the grip? How many incised lines on the ferrules? Hard to tell from the pics.
The check looks Monty or Union Hardware to me and def not Winchester.

Re: Rod ID
#16I found an identical winding check on a Shakespeare rod on the auction site. So maybe a super early Shakespeare rod. In researching this I did see where Heddon did make some of the early Shakespeare models. Reelill had mentioned Shakespeare also so hopefully he will chime in. I do enjoy trying to figure out some of these rods. There are so many similarities between many of them.
Re: Rod ID
#17This appears to be the winding check on your rod. I think that I have only seen this check with the incised line around it on these earlier shakespears. These are not the Heddon built rods that shakespeare sold. I think I have heard that these rods shown in the photos were made by Shakespeare but I am not as in the know with Shakespears. The reel seat I haven't seen on Shakespears. Could the Ferrules be Horrocks Ibbotson?
I guess the only thing I know about this rod is that it isn't a Heddon.
Richard
This reel seat slide band is similar but not exactly the same

#18Thanks Reelill for the pics. I keep thinking real early Shakespeare now. At least I have eliminated Heddon.
Re: Rod ID
#19Dang post #7 under Heddon "Macys" New York shows clearly the exact same reel seat as on my rod. He also says he has 5 Heddon rods with this reel seat. I also found a pic with the exact same grip on a first era Heddon. Also the ferrules do look like the early ones. I am back to square one. Time to eat some turkey, go pheasant hunting, and revisit this another day! Happy Thanksgiving
