Making it all : rod / reel / line

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Making it all : rod / reel / line

#1

Post by Brian K. Shaffer »

Easy enough. Make the reel.. the rod.. the silk line.
Add in the leader and fly.

Anyone make it all - just for the accomplishment ?
Many have graced these halls... some names come to mind quickly.
Some have sadly come and gone.

If you have - my hat is off to you. Tell us about it.

It would not surprise me if Bruce Howell is on that list. I read about him in Oregon Bamboo and I follow his Instagram account. He's the real deal and everything he does is first class.

Post # 11 - Alex Vardanis / oldfishbrain and I had some good chats - he will be forever missed. Pioneer.

Also I just thought of Alan Kube - showed me a reel he just finished at this past CRR. (I'll ask.)
Thanks for the responses thus far gents.

I think there might be one or two in the U.K,as much as it is very impressive to make your own rod, ferrels and guides and rod sack, tube then the hard part starts the reel and agate line guide the very very impressive part is winding your line,to those that have done this well done and please show us you work.

Do furled horsehair lines count? I've made a few. The last one was 60' WF9. Line furling is actually quite simple but unbelievably tedious.

WF4 - not sure of the length

I used to make a rod for each destination river but sold my rodmaking equipment a couple of years ago after I made rod #90.

These are some rods and reels that I made for Alaska trips.

Here are some rods made for various Argentina trips.

Here's a 12wt with foregrip that I made for tarpon in Costa Rica.

I'm now focusing on designing and making reels. I've lost count of the numbers but estimate that I've made around 60. The reels range from a 2oz. that I made for Alex Vardanis (oldfishbrain) some years ago to lots of larger spey reels.

Incredible work Brent. Very impressive.

Love the idea of building a rod for each destination river you fished. Always at awe of many board members' talent. You are up there for sure.

I have made it my goal to make everything. I haven’t gotten into trying to make silk leaders or lines yet!

I was just thinking about you, Adam! I was going to weigh in and mention that you made at least reels and rods but I wasn't sure if you were making lines. Good to see you here.

I made the rod, reel and block leather case but have not ventured into line making.

I haven’t been able to make the line but I have dabbled with 3D printing a couple reels. Eventually I will make my own metal reel. The gray bodied reel is the original eccentric angler 3D printed reel. The blue and yellow is a large arbor version I designed using some of the same design concepts.

Been following Shukken reels for twenty five years - going back to when Jim Williams at Just Reels first got them.
Fascinating to know that bamboo was also a subject matter for you Ids.
Very nice to have you.

Many thanks for all the replies & all the pictures included in this thread.

Not the reel, but the rod, braided silk line, furled leader and tied the flies, as well as making the floatant/line grease for the line, leader and flies.
