Favorite 8 footer
#1Ok Sitting here after thanksgiving dinner reading John Geirach and wishin to be fishin.Getting ready for an 8 footer.Got a 6'6",2-7',2-7'6" oh and 2 - 6' ,well one is actually 5' 9" now thanks to a 16" brookie! Geirach seems partial to a Granger 8040. What do the experts think? Cheers,Chet
Re: Favorite 8 footer
#3You missed out 7' 9", which I think is a favourite length of John Geirach.
For 8 footers, I like my Summers 856.

#5No expert here either but a couple of nice ones I'm familiar with are the Granger 8040 already mentioned, I've had a couple of them and both were DT4F rods for me. Another is the Orvis 8' 4 1/8 ounce taper, a really nice 2 piece rod I used with an Orvis WF5F "Easy Mend" long belly line.

#6I’ve fished three of the Orvis 3-piece 4 1/2 oz, the Orvis 2-piece 4 1/8 oz mentioned above, a late 30’s Granger Special 8040, and an Impregnated version of Phillipson’s 3-piece 4 1/4oz. My favorite of the bunch is the 4 1/8 oz. I do have a Heddon 3-piece 1 1/2 ferrule that I have not yet fished, so the Orvis may get pushed down in the future.

#7Most all of my rods (4-7 wts.) are from 7’9” to 8’6” with the majority around 8’. I’d hate to pick just one as a favorite, but if there was a gun to my head, I’d probably say my Reams 8’3” for four 2/2.
Re: Favorite 8 footer
#10Not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but my favorite 8-footer is my Hoffhines 4/5 wt based on a Payne 200L (2-pc configuration).
Re: Favorite 8 footer
#11I love my 8040, but my favorite 8 footer is Dennis Stone's (tapermaker) slimmed down Thomas Light Special for a 4 wt. Responsive, can cast in short or put out a long line, and just a blast to fish. I've seriously considered ordering a second just in case.
Still searching for a do it all 8' 5 wt. Just picked up a Dickerson 801510 clone, really nice action, but haven't been able to get it out on the water yet.

#15Ditto on the Phillipson 8'...restored a Pacemaker a few years ago and quickly became a favorite.

#16That is a useful comment for me. I have the 8', 4 weight from Cattanach's book. It is an interesting rod but I don't use it as often as I use some other Cattanach tapers which I have made. Your recommendation is enough for me to build the 5 weight. The 8ft, 6 weight in his book is, as you will know, essentially a Young Para 15 with an averaged tip or similar to my Summers 856.

#18It is just an all around pleasant rod to cast. Good reserve powerGodfroy wrote: ↑11/25/22 10:47That is a useful comment for me. I have the 8', 4 weight from Cattanach's book.
