Grandfathers rods: PAYNE, vernley and two others I’m not sure
#1Hi everyone happy Thanksgiving! I have four of my grandfathers fly rods. Three are bamboo. I’m just wanting to get some more information on them at this point. There was one PAYNE rod posting back about 10 years ago that looked like my grandfathers. His has the original case, 9’, 3 piece, two tips and original fabric sleeve. I’ll post some photos of the PAYNE and can post the others laster

#3Hard to tell much from that picture. I don’t think that’s an original Payne tube. Rod looks nice though.
If you post more pictures and the weight in ounces you’ll get more information.

#6Nice rod. Some closeups of a few guides, plus a measurement of each section length, would be very helpful. At the weight, it's a Model 208 or 209. The tube is not original to the rod.

#8That looks like a pretty nice original from what I see there. Built in the 1950s-60s most likely. I believe it's a Model 208.

#9Thank you for the information. I’m doing research as well and really appreciate your help. What would you estimate the value of this model to be without the original tube? I have a few other bamboo fly rods I’ll post here in the next few days. I think I’d like to sell them but haven’t decided just yet. Thanks for your help identifying the model number!

#10I would guess around $800. Others might have a more accurate estimate.

#11The Payne looks original but would have to see her first hand to know for sure
Bag looks original tube is not
$1,000-1,200
If restored 900$$
If you weight the rod one tip I can tell you model number and better appraisal

I’m assuming you meant 1,200 in the post above

#15I'm pretty sure he meant, if you would weigh the butt with the mid and one tip, he could tell you . . . .

#17I think it most likely would be a Model 209. The nominal cataloged weight for the Model 208 was 4-3/4 - 5 oz, whereas for the 209 it was 5-1/4 - 5-3/4 oz.

#18yes, it appears "heavy" in the images.headwaters wrote: ↑12/28/22 12:20I think it most likely would be a Model 209. The nominal cataloged weight for the Model 208 was 4-3/4 - 5 oz, whereas for the 209 it was 5-1/4 - 5-3/4 oz.

#19Correct as always, my math was off. 5.9 oz., subtract .5 oz. for the uplocking reel seat. leaving a nominal rod weight of 5.4 oz.headwaters wrote: ↑12/28/22 12:20I think it most likely would be a Model 209.
