MOM Flies

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

Do you know if she tied in hand or in a vise. So many of the old women tying salmon flies worked in hand. Beautiful pics of beautiful flies.

The Orvis women tied in hand. We call the flies MOM flies because Mary Ellen Orvis Marbury (Charles F Orvis daughter) compiled a book called Favorite flies in an attempt to standardize patterns. The book is a good read as it's a result of fisherman all over the US responding with their favorite flies. Mary was not the designer of these patterns, she ran the fly shop for Charles.

Here is a picture of the tyers employeed by CF Orvis

Here's evidence they tied in hand, with the best light available.

And a plate for the book. This is an actual plate used to create the chromolithographs in the book.

Most of the winging was tied in reverse, feathers or strips forward pulled back and lashed down so the heads are often oversized.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Owner was created by JS Owner of Hagerstown Maryland. I recently sent an original card with JS Owner embossed on it, and 4 wet flies sewn on, to Short Tip. Owner was an under-the-radar fly tyer and all around sportsman. I would never have known he existed had I not found the carded flies on ebay, and I never would have chased him had I not found him in Marbury's book.
Nice picture, Royce!
