Black Nose Dace Feather Wing

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

E.R. Hewitt tied a featherwing streamer that looked a lot like a Black-nosed Dace, so I think you are on solid ground here.

Nice Norm,

Walt Dette had three variations of his "demon" his answer to The "Jesse Wood" , which used Baikal Teal pointers. He stated that if the teal feathers were not available he could tie the fly using hair or with a married wing.

What was not to like regarding the Mickey Finn? All of your ties are works of art with clean lines and excellent proportions of the materials used.
Obviously, my flies fish but I never was a dedicated student and the color pallet and wide range of patterns that you've shown never cease to keep me looking for the next offering.
As an aside, if there wasn't some creative license at our disposal, there wouldn't exist the numbers of flies created to date.

What drives me nuts is seeing the marriage of the different color feathers. Mine will not stay together for me. If I can make one Parmachene Belle in 5 work and stay together I'm happy. I've seen salmon flies with rainbows for wings all sticking together. You are right about Norm's work and I have several flies of his from swaps in the top of my box if I ever get to use them.
