Winged Wet Flies

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

Winged Wet Fly

Hook - Mustad 3399
Thread - Black
Tail - Golden pheasant tippets
Body - Flat silver tinsel
Throat/Hackle - Brown hen
Wing - White, scarlet, white, scarlet married

The Bergman recipe for the wing reads, “white, scarlet, white, scarlet, married”.
Normally in written married wing recipes, the order of components is written from the top down.

The first fly I ever tied was a Leadwing Coachman Wet Fly, with the slip wings. It looked awful, I was so proud!

Norm,
All I can say is WOW!! They belong in a shadow box, not at the end of a leader.

I hate to post a fly after Norm has shown his but I did this White Miller for a Facebook swap. The swap is for panfish flies. When I lived in IL there was a farm pond down toward Kankeekee that had 'gills so big you'd swear every other one it had to be a bass. Regular 'gills from a pound to two and you had to hold them by the belly since your hand wouldn't reach around their girth. We didn't stop to admire one until you could lay it on your palm and the tail would cover up your watch. Two years this was a near secret super honey hole for a couple of us until someone on the highway stopped watched us without our paying attention. Next time we went the place was ringed with bait fishermen and was never the same again.
