Rod Identification

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Rod Identification

#1

Post by DryFly41 »

I was recently given some fly rods from my father. They were given to him by his estranged father years ago. I wanted to ID them if I can. Condition as you my expect from bamboo rods stored in a garage ceiling for a few decades. Id appreciate the experts thoughts on these. Thank you!

#1. I believe this to be a Goodwin Granger Company Colorado Special. Looks like it was refinished at some point and is missing any markings except the manufacture info on the real mount. 8' 6" Length -Two tips one is 8' the other is 8' 6"

#2 This was is labeled Edward Bristol FB-7 9’ on the shaft. I have found limited info on these. Some
Posts say the F-7 is the low end of the Edward line. I cant find any info on the “FB-7”. I cant find any real mount like this one on the Edward rods. Maybe a replacement? 9' Length

The 1st rod is a second era(1924-1934) Goodwin Granger. Not sure of which model.
The 2nd rod is a Horton Mfg Co. Bristol Edwards. Its been rewrapped but otherwise all original. The "F" series was supervised by Gene Edwards, the son of famed rod builder EW Edwards. The "B" is for the bass taper and the 7 is the middle grade of the series, the best grade being the F18 and least the F3.
The 3rd rod is a Horrocks&Ibottson.

Per Sinclair's work, 1st rod looks to be a Goodwin Granger Colorado Special (1927-1929). Granger had no grade name on the reel seat for the Colorado Special rod. The signature wrap looks right and in the right place. Wonder what the rod length is?

The First Rod, Colorado Special, is 8' in length, though there are two tips and one makes it 8"6" Maybe the shorter one is from a much prior repair?

Thank you for your input!!

Hello, my father passed in 1981 and was an avid fisherman. I recently dug out his fly rods and would love to know more about them and if I should use them. The first is a bamboo rod and the only marking is “Ziniki’s Rainbow”. I believe it is 8ft 5 inches long. It has 3 pieces. The other is a Narmco Inc. Conolon Live Fiber F 78-3 out of Costa Mesa, CA. Does the F 78-3 mean it is 7ft 8” long and has 3 pieces? I bought a 5/6 weight reel. Will these rods work with this reel? I am headed camping this weekend and plan to try my hand at fly fishing. Self taught by YouTube University. 😂 Any information to help a gal out is greatly appreciated!
