#43"We catched fish and talked, and we took a swim now and then to keep off sleepiness. It was kind of solemn, drifting down the big, still river....We had mighty good weather as a general thing, and nothing ever happened to us at all"

#44"Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The River was cut by the World's great Flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time... Under the rocks are the words and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters" Norman Maclean

#47"Oh S---". Numerous times each trip with the bearded beadheader.
Here's a few-Take your choice-they all have been heard frequently
"I hooked myself"
"I fell in"
"My doughnuts got wet"
"I got up late", or "I had to stay and have coffee and doughnuts with Joanie"
"I forgot (?) my bamboo rod" (again)
"Can you believe that Culvers is out of Pork Tenderloin"
"This Camry really gets good mileage if I go slow"- Heard at 50MPH in the left lane of I90 with 20 angry semi drivers stacked up behind us.
I could go on, but you should have the idea by now.

#49what are your favorite flyfishing quotes and why?
"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." ~John Muir "Take nothing but pictures.
Leave nothing but footprints.
Kill nothing but time."
~Motto of the Baltimore Grotto, a caving society "Rivers are roads which move, and which carry us whither we desire to go." ~Blaise Pascal
When your wife asks why you spend so much time fishing, recite one of these to her and she'll think you're the most profound, most sensitive, cigar smoking, bourbon swilling anthropoid to ever walk erect. No more questions! She may even pack a lunch for you.

#53This quot from Norman McLean is a favourite of mine; "It is not fly fishing[/i] if you are not looking for answers to questions."
A second favourite: "On the long list of things that people use, I have always felt that there are three outstanding examples of perfect harmony between utility and beauty. They are the violin, the double shotgun, and the fly rod" (William J. Schaldach),
A third favourite you see in my signature!

#54I have a quote from my dad, when I was a kid I remember that we would be sitting out on the lake in usually a rented boat. We would be bass or crappie fishing my dad would look around and say "I wonder what the poor people are doing today" then we would have a good laugh. Looking back I realize that we were probably just as poor as anyone, but I sure didn't feel like it out on that lake.

#55"It (a river) has its own life and its own beauty, and the creatures it nourishes are alive and beautiful also. Perhaps fishing is, for me, only an excuse to be near rivers. If so, I'm glad I thought of it." Roderick Haig-Brown from A River Never Sleeps.
Do yourself a favor and read more Haig-Brown. Especially good is this book & The Western Angler.

#56Just found this one:
Build me a cabin in Utah, Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout, Have a bunch of kids who call me "Pa," That must be what it's all about, That must be what it's all about.

#59"The memory of a fisherman is more like fiction than journalism, that is, it doesn't ignore the facts, but it is not entirely bound by them, either."
John Gierach
All good fishermen stay young until they die, for fishing is the only dream of youth that does not grow stale with age. (AMEN)
