Annual Catskill Campsites

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Annual Catskill Campsites

#1

Post by bob2935 »

For over 30 years I had a key to a good friends fishing camp in Fishes Eddy but my friend due to health reasons has sold his half of the camp and has not been there in 2 years. His partner nicely has allowed me to stay at the camp any time I want but not having my friend present has made it tough to bring myself to stay. Too many fond memories for sure. I am considering a Airstream Basecamp 16, pay the annual fee and leave it in the Catskills for the season. I have limited exposure to the sites that surround Roscoe and Livingston Manor, Hancock, Deposit areas and wondering if anyone could provide feedback on the various sites. Years ago Butternut Grove as the place and I did camp there this season and liked the owners and and the laid back atmosphere.

Really looking for a site that has serious fly fisherman as I do enjoy the camaraderie fellow fanatic's. Years ago I did camp on the upper Willow at rank hill Billy type camp that was a disaster in every sense of the word. Down the road there was a nice campsite but forgot the name. Is there a popular site for the Fly Fisherman? Any idea of annual fees and have to assume there are waiting lists. I do like the East Branch and any opinions about those sites would be appreciated.

Know this is a real long shot but I really the Boondock style of camping. For the uninformed that is a style of camping where you are allowed to camp on someone else's land for a fee. Any knowledge of Boondocking on some ones property in the Catskill region would be a great option. I know the free areas but really want to leave a camper for the year. Have to get my Catskill MOJO back.

Negative views are best shared off line.

Any opinions about the Air Stream Basecamp 16 would be appreciated. My wife has the Tab 400 but she would never allow me to leave that too far from home.

I know a few guides and some other very fishy people who stay at the Beaver-Del. Sounds like that may be more what you're looking for.

Thanks for the tip. I am now on their waiting list. Have had fun in the Beaverdel.com bar over the years. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as the list at the "Beaverhell" as I call it is long.

It seems so difficult to be spontaneous these days.

I agree and I am in no way a good planner.

For the past few years I have kept my camper at Butternut Grove campground in Cooks Falls. It's right on the Beaverkill. It seems that the site is mostly filled with fisherman, including a number of guides and even the owner of the local fly shop in Roscoe.

Plusses: Its open early in the season. You can get in in late March or early April, even though the water is not on (they have a bathroom which is functional)

It has decent wifi.

Owners are on site and very nice and accommodating.

Easy access to Rt 17. A short drive to both branches of the Delaware, the entire Beaverkill and close to the Willow.

Thanks for the information. Myself and my wife did stay there for a weekend this year and I really liked the owners and the site. I am in the process of trying to secure a spot now. Did not know they open so early and that would also be great. Thanks for the feedback
