It is marbleized bakelite. The Harlaw is usually seen in black.

#10Two Paul H. Young Co. Trik-Kutters, and a PHY line and leader gauge. Both tools were available at least as early as the 1930's. They are shown with the materials they were designed to be used with - a packaged PHY Spanish gut leader, and a PHY dry fly (spentwing Adams Egg Sac pattern, circa 1942). I use a Trik-Kutter and the leader gauge for making up leaders and tippets.
The "Trik-Kup," a PHY folding drinking cup, shown with its catalog description.
I would like to find a tin of Young's "Preen" fly and line dressing, as well as Young's "Liquid Preen," a dry fly floatant that came in a bottle with a buckskin harness with buttonhole to hang on one's jacket or fly vest.

I will try and find the photo of my ex father-in-law fighting his cat over a 35 lb. king salmon on the bow of his boat....6 lb. Siamese cat won and claimed the salmon as his ...father -in-law got 13 stitches....only fish he caught that day.

"Out of all the people you could fish with, why me?" Simple... your moral compass is pointed in the right direction.

#14Posted with apologies, cause as opposed to being a gizmo or a gadget, this is more akin to a contraption.
Back in 1951, with input from the 'Dean of American Flyfishing', George Harvey, Ronald Fye concocted what would became known as the Fye Box. Some nine years later, Rex Richardson would purchase Fye's company (and patent) and rename the works, The Richardson Chest Box Company.
Purchased from an estate sale, I was told that this particular box belonged to a Montana fly-tier who worked at Dan Bailey's shop ... interspersed among the original owner's creations are a few of Franz Potts' flies.
Integral leader wallet
Catgut soaking compartment w/felt pads
Fye Box
Hollidaysburg, PA
Pat. Pend.

#15Being a "Holidaysburg" version I think this is an original Fye Box and not one made by Rex Richardson when he purchased the company from Ron Fye. Man, that is a nice addition to ANY fly fishing collection. There are those in Japan that would probably pay good money for that box. I have a couple early Fye's but they are both made by Rex right after he purchased from Ron and still have the "Fye" name on them.

#16Yes, it is an original ... the 'Pat. Pend'(ing) stamped into the bottom places this box right at the beginning of Fye's chest box-building career.Upon further review, it appears as though this box can be dated between 24-Oct-1947 and sometime early in 1951 ... here's the patent (#2,539,302) link:DrLogik wrote:Being a "Holidaysburg" version I think this is an original Fye Box ...

#18Dean/Reelsmith, to drop names, Dan & Kelly say you are the man to talk to if I want to get into collecting old fly tying tools and other gadgets. Now that I am retired I spend a lot of time in my fly tying room/man cave that we built just before retirement and want more things to look at.
Thanks in advance,
David

Thank you Dan & Kelly.
Well, I wish I knew how to help you. I can certainly keep you in mind should I get any duplicates. Other than that ...hunt, hunt, hunt.
Many old fly tying tools and fly fishing gadgets are downright rare ...and rare is not a term I use loosely. Take for instance this vise ...
In all my years of tackle collecting this is the only one I have ever seen. Which is not to say its the only one out there ...but I have seen dozens of original Hardy Bougle reels, several Hardy Barton reels, short Gillums and Garrisons ...but only one of these vises. So, how rare does that make it?
The most common antique fly tying vises look similar to this one ...
These are usually found without a makers mark. If you keep an eye on all of the big tackle auctions (Lang's, Mullock's, etc), scour eBay religiously and go to tackle shows, you might see a few of these each year.
Here are a few other fly-tying related doo-dads ...
The good news is, collecting gadgets is generally more affordable than collecting rods and reels. The bad news is great rods and reels come along far more often than do good gadgets.
Let me know what you are looking for in particular and I'll keep you in mind.
Patience is the key.
Dean.
