Ed Van Put passing

Post by DireWolf53 »

Today from the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of a true legend in the world of fly fishing, Ed Van Put. An author, historian, friend, and mentor, Ed was the embodiment of patience, skill, and unwavering passion for the sport.
Through his tireless dedication working with the NYSDEC, Ed helped shape not only the way we access our local rivers, but the spirit of our organization. His contributions have left an indelible mark that will continue to guide and inspire us for generations to come.
He was a founding member of the Beamoc Chapter of Trout Unlimited, as well as a founding member of the Catskill Fly Tiers Guild.
Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Van Put family, friends, and all those who were inspired by Ed.
Rest in peace, Ed. The Catskill waters will always be a little richer for having known you.

A true gentleman angler, Ed was always quiet and gracious at our gatherings in the Catskill Museum and at various Guild functions. We will miss him!

Although I've known Ed a lot shorter than most of you, he was so generous with his time and sharing his knowledge.
We talked about doing a Q&A but unfortunately time didn't allow us.
Thanks Ed.

Hard to beat this quote. Ed was special. His books on the region should be required reading to anyone who fishes there.

I first read of Ed in Art Lee's book on fishing the dry fly. When I took up fly tying, I wrote Ed and asked for an adams I could use as a model for my tying. He sent several. He contacted me and sent a copy of his Catskill Rivers book for review in Midwest Flyfishing. Just an all around mensch was Ed Van Put, whom I always wanted to fish with.

Ted,

Total agreement...

The Adams, perhaps Ed's favorite dry fly,
