Re: Made a new rod lately version 1.2
#2661In my quest for a longer fly rod suitable for soft hackles and wets, I measured a 9' 6" Hardy Rogue River steelhead, which I made and was impressed with, then deducted 15% from the taper.
I kept the top two sections the same length as the original but lengthened the handle, where the optional Hardy screw in would have been, making for a total length of 9' 10".
The rod is hollowed and has very similar tip dimensions to a Garrison 5wt. Under-handle is 'double built' meaning- thin 2 or 3mm strips of surface bamboo glued around the outside of the blank then turned round under the corks. The reel fittings (very lightly polished and dip lacquered) were taken from a broken Hardy greenheart rod from 1908, the brass screws of which, screw into maple strips also attached to the outside of the blank under corks.
Wooden end button is the original polished rosewood. Finish- 10 coats of Tru-Oil rubbed satin with gloss varnish on the whipping.
Though I have yet to fish this rod, it seems to be surprisingly light and responsive and I think will work well with 5/6 wt. DT lines. The longer handle will assist with back casts and provides a useful arm rest while fishing. Double handed trout spey style casts may well be possible.
All in all, a very happy bamboo experiment which I named the Hardy Rogue River "Wet".

#2663Very nice. Building something a little out of the mainstream always impresses me.

#2665Very nice rod. I always admire makers who sign the rod spiraling around the blank. It takes a lot of skill and patience.

#2669These are not "rods" yet as I only made two blanks for a friend who will be finishing them by himself. 7'#4 based on "SirD" and 7'3''#4 made with my own taper. "Sleeve bamboo ferrules", wrapped with nylon thread, epoxied and varnished. As my friend will dip the rods in varnish I only "sealed" the blanks with one coat of "Bison" polyurethane glue.

#2670It took me almost three months to finish this rod. Ok,... I'm not the fastest rodmaker in the world, it could be made faster but I usually have "a million" other things to do while making a rod The rod is 8'8'' long, partially hollowed construction, "varnished" with Bison polyurethane glue, it casts well with #5dt line. Weight 128grams. Medium fast progressive action, suitable for "dry flies, wet flies, nymphs" and even smaller streamers..

#2671Another very good looking rod , Jan. I would enjoy fishing with you some time after seeing the beautiful rivers you have been to.

#2672This is a masterful-looking rod. I think of my Sharpe's "88," which I love, and imagine its weight reduced by 30% and action smoother because if the bamboo ferrule. Lovely!
BTW it would be great to know how those ferrule plugs were made. Thank you!

#2673Here’s my second bamboo rod, based on Dickerson 801611D taper. 3pce 2 tip, blued hardwear from Tony Young with a Eucalyptus burl from my wood stash. Hex rod tube is Tasmanian Oak with Silky oak end caps.
This thing is a joy to cast, yet to christen on a fish but hope to change that shortly on a trip down to Tasmania.

#2675Thank you Santafecino. Ferrule plugs as I make them are simple to make. A nail cut to proper length, a piece of cork and a piece of wood or bamboo. Nail is glued in the cork with epoxy, shaped in the lathe to the final diameter and then glued to the wooden "head"... In this case they are made of bamboo..Santafecino wrote: ↑11/24/22 14:26This is a masterful-looking rod. #2676Great looking rod Recidivist13! Is the taper available somewhere in the internet?Recidivist13 wrote: ↑11/24/22 17:43Here’s my second bamboo rod, based on Dickerson 801611D taper. 3pce 2 tip, blued hardwear from Tony Young with a Eucalyptus burl from my wood stash. #2677Yes it is, I think I might have got it from the taper library on Hexrods
I can always send it to you, just message me. It is a true 6 wt I think, or mine and my mates build certainly turned out that way.

#2678Great work displayed here, folks! Recidivist13, your second rod is better than my 10th I think. Awesome thread work and if it fishes as good as it looks, you're in business, as my dad used to say.
