Kickapoo Bamboo 7 1/2' 5 wt 2 piece 1 tip. Hollow fluted 3.5 oz. Payne 101 taper. All shop-made hardware and case. Blued Duronze 13-12 step down ferrule (Tony Young "Dickerson-style" design). Aluminum uplocking reel seat. Red carnelian stripping guide and winding check. A really nice casting rod.

Mike and Tom, great looking rod-thanks for sharing! Aside from the weight reduction, did you aim to maintain the feel of the original 101 taper or to soften it a bit through hollowing?

Bill, Thanks for the kind words. I’ve never cast an original so I wouldn’t know how it feels. We simply hollow tapered the butt from .060” to .050” wall thickness and the tip from .050” to .040” after tapering to the measurements of Dennis Higham’s Payne 101 in Hexrod. Guide spacing was from that rod also. We made three from the same culm and they all feel the same to me. My favorite taper so far. Mike

Here’s a 3 ounce 3 wt. parabolic, based on the Payne 7’1” para, stretched to 7’6”. Very parabolic. I’ll be listing it in the Classifieds in a few days after my wife sews a bag for it and I’ve finished the tube

A few months back Lee Orr was offering a few pieces of old American Chestnut for reel seat spacers that he salvaged from an old building back there and I was one of the folks who jumped on the offer. I also happen to have a small stash of Pearsall's Chestnut. Here is a rod I built recently on commission that features both. It's an 8' hollowed 6 wt based on the 8013, but using micro-ferrules made by Tony Young. I used Bellinger reel seat hardware and a Golden Witch stripping guide.

Payne 100 taper converted to 3 piece. I have some cane set aside for a second tip when I get around to it.

Finished this one up with a lot of inspiration from Eustis Edwards. Used a Payne 198 taper and made the nickel silver seat with black ABS accents. Winding check is also black ABS. Vintage agate stripping guide and wrapped in pongee tipped in purple, a' la Edwards. Has Edwards signature wraps as well. Tim Zietak

Its lacquer that I used on the wraps. Have to put it on in thin coats.

I have been experimenting with reel seat designs. This one I made from titanium and cherry wood.

Image

It is important to me for the reel seat to work with a thick or a thin reel foot. The internal taper in the sliding band helps with this.
