Now retired 13 years later. Looking at date and # of posts makes me wonder how many times I was locked out and started with a new handle. Fish probably close to 175 days a year now so can’t complain much. Miss a lot of the names on the 36 pages. Hell, I really miss the old board but life moves on.

Don't remember if I've posted to this thread in the past or not. Present screen name goes back to 2013, but I've been OldCaneRods and I think one other that I couldn't get back into prior to using OldCane. Have been life member of TU for decades, I guess.

Been living in Dutchess County, NY since 2010 and was in Los Angles for 25 years before that, but I'm an East Coast person, raised in Western NY, with family ties to N.E. PA - Wayne & Pike Counties. Plus other family ties to the Great White North of Canada. My six years in US Navy added a few more locations too. Fished a lot growing up in what's now Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park with my dad during the '50's, 60's. Mostly spinning, but a few times also on tiny speckled/brookie streams using one of dad's 9' Montagues that was twice my own height back then. Took up fly fishing more when in out in LA and fished the Bishop, Ca area quite a bit. Got hooked on doing bamboo rod repairs in my spare time back them too. I also had a small time by mail rod list about 25 years ago working with a rod restorer turned rod maker. That ended with eBay coming along and when I had major medical problems that took up a few years of recovery.

As for jobs, let's see, senior reactor operator at SUNYAB, electronic tech, field engineer, sales engineer, west coast sale manager, small business owner and a few others. Retired when we moved back to NY, but working just as hard it seems in support of veterans.

I'm post commander of the local American Legion post, was vice president of our Vietnam Veterans of America chapter and also belong to Blue Water Navy, Tin Can Sailors, DESA (Destroyer Escort Sailors of America) and in my "spare time" working on a putting together a "real" shop to repair and build rods - only one full rod made when I took the rod making class at the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum. Slowed down a bit on finishing the shop when I had to have two full knee replacements and age creeping up on me.

Tight lines!
I don't have a PhD, but I do have a DD214.

I live in the Finger Lakes area in New York and have been retired for 9 years. Help stock some of my local streams in late March but have been doing some camping and fishing on the Beaverkill the last 3 years. 2018 will be my 18th year of fly fishing and have dappled in bamboo for about 5 years, my wife and also do a little Tenkara fly fishing. I have really come to appreciate all of the knowledge represented by the members of this forum and thank those who have replied to my questions and comments.

I'm a soon to retire ( after 35 yrs) school psychologist in SE Va. and relocated here after two years as principal to a small K- 3 elementary school in Gettysburg, Pa. Started flyfishing during the last two months of my internship in South central Pa. and picked up my first bamboo rod in 2000.Still feel like a novice. Ive been an on - again, off - again adjunct prof in the graduate program in school psych and for a time did private practice work. My wife and I just celebrated 35 yrs of marriage and have two wonderful sons , who fortunately, share my love of flyfishing. I fish mostly blue lines in Va. and Pa. but have made annual pilgrimages to YNP since 1990. My oldest son, Ben, went out with me two years ago and outfished me and my two fishing buddies. He was on fire and I couldnt have been happier. Im taking my younger son out this summer for a week, then my wife, son Ben and his fiance are joining me for another week. They all plan to do some fishing. My wife has been resistant( she doesnt like to get up early) but had a good time fishing with Casting for Recovery ( breast cancer survivor) and is a decent caster for the little time she has spent on the water ( thanks to lessons from Hank Wolman a number of years ago)
I started helping out with Casting for Recovery and Project Healing Waters and plan to spend more time next year after retirement.
This has gotten much longer thah I anticipated.
Thanks for all the wonderful knowledge so many are willing to share.Am looking for a nice rod ( or two)for a retirement gift next year.
Best,
Steve

Below is my original post from Jan 2007 (when I had been on The Forum 4 months) and an "update" from Aug 2008.

United States Air Force: 25 years in both airborne (AWACS) and ground-based command and control systems. Currently stationed at Tinker AFB, OK, but I will be retiring this summer. Looking for a job in central PA. Also looking for my 1st 3-piece bamboo rod: 8.5 - 9', 5 - 6 weight with a casting action for nymph fishing.

Update: Retired from the USAF in September of 2007 and stayed in Midwest City, OK. Currently working as a Project Manager for Robinson Aviation (RVA), Inc.

Update (almost 10 years later): We still live in Midwest City, OK because both our daughters married guys who were born here. It's a long drive to "mountain stream fishing" for me and to the ocean for my wife, but we're making it work. In Oct 2009, the Air Force contacted me and invited me to come back to work for them as a civilian employee in the 552 Air Control Wing. Still enjoying the work every day! I have learned a lot on The Forum and thank all those who have shared their knowledge/passion for bamboo rods. My wife survived breast cancer and we have 2 grand daughters.

I guess I did not see this back when I joined the group in 2016.

I am a retired college professor (fancy name for teacher) living in Southernmost Illinois.... Like 30 minutes from Paducah, KY. I had the only two programs of their kind in the US. I trained Shooting Complex and commercial hunting managers. Did that for 35 years. I am the lucky guy that turned his avocation into his occupation. Did my degree work in wildlife science, AG, Forestry and education. Like a bunch of us children of the 60's I guess I have enough paper to cover a wall..... I am proud to say that many of my graduates are managing private properties ranging from 1000-50,000 ac. Not bad for a bunch of Red Neck kids that liked to hunt and fish. In addition to the programs we had a shotgun team that won National and Runner Up National Championships as well as a herd of individual wins in various disciplines. I was a busy guy.....

I retired 5 years ago and at age 70 am enjoying as much of what I like to do as I can. I am (we are) fishing, shooting and hunting as much as we can. Had to put it all on hold this past summer as the other part of "we" my wife, was diagnosed with non germal, large cell Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. We did the chemo for six treatments and as of October she was cancer free.... This may well have been the most excruciating thing I have ever been through let alone her and I was not the patient. Truthfully, according to her, she only had about 4-5 bad days through it all. She went through without any of the old horror stories.

We are up and running as I write this. She has a lot of strength to regain but she is already talking about planning some fishing trips to E. TN, AR and Missouri. I am not able to "run" around like I once did due to heart and COPD problems but we manage.

I grew up in NE Jersey and was lucky enough to fish many of the fabeled Holy Grail wates of the Catskills as well as most of the West Jersey waters when I was a kid back in the late 50's and 60's. Miss those spots a lot but have found some excitement in the cold water of AR and East TN as well as Missouri. These are all a bit of a drive but now, with retirement its worth it.

Thats me.......

I as well never opened this untill today though I have been on the site for a while. I am a pipefitter welder by trade and have traveled extensively with work beginning in 1970, originally by choice and later more out of necessity. I have worked in 18 states from Key Largo, FL. to Prudhoe Bay, AK. and I "retired" in 2000 at 55 but never really quit working. The last 5 years I was employed at the Orvis Store in Baton Rouge where my home still is. My Pension allows returning to work in covered employment with no penalty upon reaching 70 1/2 and I returned to working "at the trade" back in July. I am currently in the San Francisco area working on a project at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond, CA.

I am a semi retired musician, I play flamenco guitar. I tend to do more fly fishing then music now a days.
Although I still happily perform the concerts and shows that interest me.
I live in Hobart Tasmania, a wonderful little island with a huge selection of rivers and lakes.
I enjoy reading this website and found this post very interesting.

I retired in a April 17 after I’m retired after providing 36 years of civilian service to the military. I live outside of Newville, PA and am fortunate to within 10 miles of the Letort, Big Sring and the headwaters of the Yellow Breeches (headwaters). Near constant water temps allow me to fish for wild brown, brook and rainbow trout all winter.

As a number of others have done, I somehow missed this thread over the years. I was around this site as far back as Clark Davis and got back in about six years ago.
I am a retired Corrections administrator/Warden at the county level with both adult and juvenile facilities under my direction.

I've been fly fishing since the 70's and went almost exclusively to bamboo 25 - 30 years ago.
Spent a reasonable amount of time (far from enough) fishing in Montana and Wyoming over the years.
My home waters are the Brodhead and McMichaels creeks in PA with the occasional foray into the Upper Delaware.
I also enjoy bird hunting with my best buddy Cash. He's the one in my avatar without a hat.

The knowledge base among the members here is really a treasure for those wanting to learn about the sport and the history and craft of bamboo rodmaking. Many thanks!

I'm a security guard in Phoenix, Arizona, but I grew up in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I miss being able to go fishing after school or work, and having streams, ponds, and lakes within biking distance... but Arizona has some great waterways, so I can't complain! (Plus I can fly fish year-round, ain't that a treat!)

Live in Massachusetts. I work in a metal fabrication shop. I do the programming for our laser, waterjet and cnc punch along with giving the shop floor instructions on how to cut and bend all material and tubing to do the job. We do alot
of polished stainless steel for the hi-tech industries as well as heavy structural stuff as well. Does not leave as much time as i want to hunt and fish though.

I'm a chef consultant from Newcastle North East England but I live in Melbourne Australia . If you've ever watched Gorden Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares TV Show ,that's basically what I do without all the drama for TV cameras .

Like Andre, I don't know if I've posted in this thread before, so I'll do it here to make sure my info is in the thread. (BTW, Andre, do you still have that pink vest?)

I am now the village idler in Callao, Virginia, but before that I was the editor of the local newspaper. Callao is on Virginia's Northern Neck between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. I spend about 365 days a year thinking about fishing and considerably fewer actually doing it.

Wow... 15 years later...
Hang around a bamboo rod forum long enough and you are sure to get into splitting cane.

This is a neat thread that should not be lost just yet.

Great reading and a nod to those lost, may they rest in peace.

Lived on the AuSable outside Grayling for 20 years. Planning on going to New Zealand for our 26th anniversary and trip got canceled because of COVID in 2020. But it also drove up the price of our log home so we sold and moved to Bozeman, MT. Semi-retired in commercial real estate and been in Bozeman for a year now and love all those day time hatches. One thing we have also noticed is how happy and friendly people are here. Also shout out to Mark and Martha K ( Helmtflies) for all their help and advise during our house hunt.

UPDATE!!

January 4, 2019 was my last day of work and I escaped from the Twin Cities to Sheridan, WY. Both of my adult children are in Bozeman MT with good jobs. Fishing, tennis and family (including Lois, my dog) take up most of my time.
