The 1949 PHY catalog offered an 8'6" light trout rod in "Ace" or "Special" grade, built with a 14/64 ferrule and a 4/64 tiptop for HEH line. I believe that this rod I recently acquired is an example of this model. The tips measure 0.060" at the tiptop, which is less than the same measurement on my 6'3" PHY Midge.
The rod casts a DT4F line. I have not handled a similar long, light-line PHY rod since 2008 when I cast two of Paul Young's own personal rods, an eight-footer and an astonishing nine-foot rod, both taking a DT4F line. The rod has PHY's preferred node arrangement of 2x2 and is beautifully built. In every way (except for the lack of decorative spiral thread wraps) it is the equal of the "Special" model that was offered as the highest-grade PHY rod.
The Special is above; the Ace, below. Hardware is identical (the Special also has a "Detroit" stamp on the butt cap, hidden from view in this photo).
