I just found this one in the back of the closet. I remember buying it a few years ago and meant to research it, but never did. I guess that makes it "new" again! Thanks dder for your post as I came here today to do some research. I didn't think I would stumble upon the same reel!

Got myself another Hardy Perfect 3 1/8" It´s a 1912 with a tapered spindle and an agate lineguard.
This one´s got the smaller check wheel. My other 1912´s have a much bigger wheel.. wonder why they changed it.. ???
It was a bit wobbly when I got it, but I managed to compress the bushing a bit so now it´s nice and tight again. :) ImageImageImageImageImage

Just received from Bill a superbly refurbished (except for the reel rash already on it) a 3" repro St.George. Thank goodness the original agate ring had no cracks.

My first "pre-owned" reel sent out to be worked on. Bill is a magician & a treasure to those who collect reels.

A lovely reel indeed!

I'm new to Georges, but I see that your 3 3/8" version has an arbour of increased width, much like the Golden Princes of the 1980s. Your reel could be considered a mid-abour.

Just eyeballing your picture would suggest to me that the amount of increase in arbour diameter would be approaching that of my modern (mid-arbour) 3 1/4" Tibor Light.

I wonder why they would want to widen the spool's arbour, way back then in the 20s & lose valuable backing capacity. Of course your George would have been designed with thinner silk lines in mind, but still a line configuration of a bulkier DT design.

Still, this is just speculation on my part. Perhaps you or someone in the know about those old "large arbour" 3 3/8" St.Georges would have the answer?

The mid (or larger arbor) St Georges were meant for faster pick up of line and also to prevent coiling of the thinner silk lines used at the time. I might be able to get a Cortland Sylk on it with 25 yds backing... I'll have to see. I'd also say if you fish where there are larger trout..... this may be best left in the reel case.

Still a dandy little reel.

Bogdan Prototype on page 1_____________________________________________

Orvis / Abel CFO # III and II - a really tough get nowadays - believe me.
Now why did I ever sell my # I.

The answer to my own question on page 1 of how many reels can one guy own is pretty interesting now - 14 years years later.

I picked up a beauty, a pre war Hardy 3 1/2 inch Spitfire Salmon Perfect by Jimmy Smith. This will be a great steelhead and grilse/salmon reel for dry fly fishing.
Regards from the Restigouche....Jim

With the abundance of all these beautiful Hardy examples, dare I post my lowly Youngs made for Orvis Battenkill?! It is my understanding that this was a short run in 1969. 3-3/8" - Beaudex style. Very tight and straight with an excellent check mechanism. For my new Stone FE Thomas "Light Special".

Upon seeing a Beaudex in the classifieds, I have to wonder if the Youngs made Battenkill is actually a 3 1/4" rather than 3 3/8"? Looking at the literature I note that they made the reel in 3 - 3 1/4 - 3 1/2" etc? Seems unlikely they would have re-tooled to make a short run for Orvis?
I bought this as listed 3 3/8" from a very reputable dealer - not that an eighth of an inch matters.

The #2 is a nice reel; and you’re right, surprisingly hard to find
