Got a new reel lately?

Re: Got a new reel lately?
#1521hi all.
my latest addition, nothing special besides being L-shaped. has been used a lot and you can see it.
the line guide had a bad groove which I sanded and polished out to hopefully useable state. looks quite nice inside though. and the spool is surprisingly straight. the spare spring and pawl look unused. the spring in action was quite lame; bent it out a little and now it works just fine. so I can save the spare. I decided this will be my 4/5 weight reel (mounted here on a CGR 570-3) for the future (besides some others, I guess). also decided to retire my Marquis #5 for this one.
my question now is, what age is this reel?
I looked up a couple threads and pages on the HARDY Lightweight/LRH L-shaped line guide (or guard?), found when the first ones where made, found this is a "younger" one, but could not get a good date whereabout this one was made. would guess late 50s - early 60s. am I completely wrong or is this it?
(sorry for bad quality pics, the "good" camera is out skiing with my wife)
I almost forgot. the spool had lost the finish (or is it called coating) around two spots on the handle and on some bigger area inside, so I decided to polish off all I could on the front and inside.
thanks,
Wolfgang

Re: Got a new reel lately?
#1523thanks piglegs. I found your picture while searching for the L-shaped style. you mean this type was made only in 1960, or around 1960? the reason I am asking, I was born in 1964, and it would be cool to have a reel made in this year. is it possible to get a manufacturing year on such a reel? they did not have serial numbers back then I think. btw, the one shown in your catalog picture, does it have a ribbed or smooth foot? mine has a smooth foot. does this help?
thanks again,
Wolfgang

Re: Got a new reel lately?
#1524Wolfgang,
I've seen a 1962 LRH with a half ribbed reel foot and your L guide dating to 1962 but not sure if this lasted until 1964. The U shape guard came after the L both with and without the 895921 pat. no stamp but not sure when this occurred-1964/5? I'm sure someone else will give the answer, I'd like to know. The reel foot in the catalogue is half ribbed I think.
Edit: Jamie Maxtone-Graham says lightweight U guard introduced in 1964 so there you have it Wolfgang. You will need to buy another reel if you want it to match your birth year.

#1525I'm Hardy guy and never cared too much S-handle reels but when I had a chance to grab this small beauty, I simply couldn't resist it

Re: Got a new reel lately?
#1526Picked this up yesterday in a trade. A Sharpe's Gordon 3 1/4". Both parties are happy!
If his memory serves, it was bought at Spag's in Mass. back in the 1970's.
It's been sitting in its box since then, unused. I cleaned the old molasses like grease out of it and hit it with the Hot Sauce. It now purrs like a kitten.
It is RHW, but can be reversed.
I know it's not a valuable collector's piece but the condition is like new!
Now. What to do with it....
7.80 The price back then?
Best,
Bob

#1527I found this gem. A 4" Farlow Perfect. It'll make a beautiful reel for a switch rod.

#1533I've wanted a good pre-war 1492 Medalist for a long time and discovered they were not so easy to find. When I found this one, I snapped it up. It has most of its original finish and is in perfect mechanical condition.

Re: Got a new reel lately?
#1540Thanks, the lineguard seem to be made of brass rather than ns... Any explaination why? Never seen a brass lineguard on a hardy reel before.
