Thanks so much,

Steve,
Thank you for the kind remarks. The technique I use is the Gilpatrick method as described in his book "Building A Strip canoe". My first one was the Hiawatha, a fifteen footer designed by the folks at Bear Mountain. Kits are available with all of the necessary materials but I chose to make everything myself with the exception of the seat(s). The Hiawatha had a maximum beam of 33" which made it a bit tippy. The fourteen footer was a modification of the Hiawatha, I shortened it by a foot and increased the beam width, it is a dream to paddle. The thirteen footer is the same basic design of the Hiawatha. My goal is to keep up with my weakening back by making lighter canoes. The original Hiawatha is 50 lbs, the fourteen footer is 40 lbs and the thirteen footer should be about 35 lbs. The whole process is not difficult, just time consuming. If you google "cedar strip canoe" you will find some sights with lots of photos of the entire process.
Thanks again.
Bob

I've enjoyed all of the gear displayed so far a great deal, there have been many which I wish I had! But the canoes which you made yourself Silver Rat are really magnificent. Perhaps it's because they are so different from what we usually show here, but there is something deeply beautiful about their proportions and elegant forms and how they reflect the materials so wonderfully. I have enormous respect for those who are handy - such as the rod, reel, net and box builders on this Forum. To have made these yourself is a truly fantastic achievement. I can imagine using them is very special.
