Just spent an evening fishing the 7 1/2 ft 5 wt Moderate Cut 3 pc.

If it makes any sense, when I close my eyes, it is as if I am casting my late ‘50s Payne 198. It is smooth and powerful but not overly so. You can check out the flex in the rod in the pic. My wife used it to land a nice 10” brook trout.

Image

I also own an eight foot five weight Hunt DF and a seven and a half foot four weight Hunt DF. Had I know what these Moderate cuts were like I would have had Marc make all of my Aroners with this way.

Trust this answers some of your questions.

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,
Thanks for the reply.
Great flex in the photo. I have an 8’ Spring Creek special that is a powerful rod. I am saving for the same rod in a medium cut as I like the fuller flexing rods like a 50 or a 50L vs the 50DF.
It’s good to hear the mediums fit that softer action.

My 8’ 3 pc 5wt Hunt weighs in at 4 3/8 ozs. Should the moderate cut come in slightly lighter I think you’ll have a winner. The moderate cuts seem to have the same tip taper but the mid and butt have a little less lumber.

What line weight are you looking for?

Richard

Richard,
Looking for a solid 5 wt. I have plenty of 8' 4 wts, and 8'+. 6 wts, not many 8' 5 wts.
Those rods you have look real nice and must be real enjoyable with a full flexing taper. Enjoy.

Here, I present three of Orvis' shortest - cataloged - three piece rods, each paired with a 3" Hardy reel.

From the top:

7 1/2' Manchester with 3" St. George
7' Seven Four with a 3" JLH Ultralite #5
6 1/2' Rocky Mountain Fly (converted from a Fly & Spin) with a 3" Duchess

Okay, I cheated just a little as the Rocky Mountain was a Fly and Spin model before being converted to just a Fly.

Tight lines and cold water,
Joe

All three generations of the Orvis Seven/Four. They all have the same taper and action, but the original (70s-early 80s) version is 2 3/4 oz, the mid-80s version is 3 3/8 oz, and the 90s version is 3 3/4 oz due to increasingly more nickel silver, wood, and fatter grips. They all feel great in hand, though.

Inspired by Lon's recent post of early Leonards, and several comments mentioning that for some reason Leonards seem to be under represented on this board: Here are three Leonard DF rods, all marked Tournament, and each paired with a Hardy reel from the same era as the rod. Top to bottom:
- A 50 1/2 DF from the 1950s with a post-war 3 1/8" Perfect.
- A post-war 50DF Hunt with a Hardy LRH with 2-screw line guide.
- A pre-war 49DF with a pre-war 3" St. George.
These three outfits cover nearly all the trout fishing I do these days. I could probably be happy fishing just them for the rest of my life ... but I won't.
