Who do you buy new books from:

Amazon?

I was a big buyer at Barry Serviente's Anglers Art (pre-internet) - also Wilderness Advesntures. Now, I buy English book from Paul Morgan in Wales, as well as a few new books from ananglersbookcase.com and Ken Callahan also.

Are there any good sites that announce books in the works, new arrivals of quality books etc????

Any discussion appreciated.

Amazon's prices are hard to beat, but I would more strongly support a specialist vendor if I thought I was getting good service (plastic jackets; early announcements; webistes that are current etc)>

Kevin

When I'm looking for a book, I usually first start with Amazon.com, Bookfinder.com, AbeBooks, com or Alibris.com. If the books are available new and / or used, they'll show the prices for each and you can then go to the individual sellers to review the books, conditions, etc. By the way, since the books I buy are for my personal use (not for collecting) .... most often for fly tying, I've been able to find some great bargains on some of the used books ...... got a few of them that were virtually new. Take care.

Best

Thanks Bob - Great minds must think alike because that's about what I do!Image

What I was wondering specifically about is how to find out about the new books coming out (ones that I am not aware of from other sources).

What I usually do is search amazon "fly fishing" and then sort by date. Some of the smaller presses are missed that way. I used to like to get Wildadv's flyer, but seem to be off the list if its still around. Like I need info to buy more books.....!

If I want a specialist, I use Judy Bowman (jubobo@AOL.com) or Jim Adams (adamsangling@comcast.net) or Gary Estabrook (360-699-5454). All three are experts with many years in the business and have hundreds of new, used and rare books on hand. Adams also catalogs bamboo rods and high-end reels, including many new and used Hardy's.
If you get your Christmas bonus early, James Cummins in N.Y. has a nice 3rd edition of The Compleat Angler, for only $25,000.00.

IMO, the best dealer of all time was the late Joe Wilcox, of Albion, Michigan. Joe was a lawyer and good with words. He wrote a paragraph or so description of each book listed, and some of them were pretty hot. They were from the 1980's but still available from the dealers.

I like books and have a "substantial" collection gathered over 40 plus years.

If you have a print catalog as mentioned, I suggest value it.

I gave away my large collection of print book catalogs {mainly on western USA titles} to an internationally known dealer and was amazed at his, and his co-workers response of gratitude.

Some day, those paragraph description catalogs you mention will be appreciated by someone.

Fellow Bibliophiles: OK, here's a serious tip for you all...

If you are interested in currently published titles which have been remaindered, the best list going, IMHO, is available from Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, Falls Village, CT 06031-5000.

I've been a Hamilton customer for over 25 years and have purchased many wonderful fly fishing titles from him for between $2 and $10 each. He handles remaindered books (hard and soft cover) from premier outdoor publishers such as Lyons Press, Stackpole and others.

Do yourself a favor and send your name and address to Mr. Hamilton. You'll be glad you did and you'll receive 2-3 newspaper-style lists monthly with thousands of book titles in every subject category imaginable.

And no, he doesn't have a website. Like yours truly, he's definitely "Old School".

Regards,

(aka "Flyman615")

P.S.- I just received 6 hardback fly fishing titles. They retail for $158. I paid $45.20 including shipping. Not a bad deal.

Actually, he does have a website, www.hamiltonbook.com. Absolutely great deals if he happens to have something you want.

kaaterskill: Well, I guess I'm officially the last "Old School" guy left. Hamilton's website must be something relatively new. It doesn't appear on any of his mailed catalogs. Go figure. Thanks for the info!
