#302Capt. Frank, handsome dogs! How is the disposition and temperament of a Whippet?
Lots of exercise like most dogs needed right?

#303Depends on the year... some years the sharpy and rooster hunting is pretty bleak.jhuskey wrote:Wow, never knew that Montana had good ringneck hunting. Good to know for future reference.
If you're coming from the east, I wouldn't drive past the Dakotas so you could hunt roosters in Montana...
I'd probably be able to report better Montana hunting if I had a circle of Montana dedicated rooster hunting friends. That I don't have.
Just as I don't have a circle of Montana dedicated flyfishing friends. Dual sport riding friends. Competitive shooting friends. Elk hunting friends. I spend a lot of time trying to do at least a little bit of everything.

#304My grandfather's old shotgun came down to me along with the flyrod. The shotgun is probably a lot older than the flyrod/reel. The fact he named his horse "Buck" and his dog "Shot" might have been a clue as to where his priorities lay before he married later in life...jhuskey wrote:Wow, never knew that Montana had good ringneck hunting. So every year now, I take that old N.R. Davis out and have a go at the roosters with it. Can barely hit anything with it - Conservation Through Incompetence... Although it patterns fine on the patterning board.

#305Jim, Brittany's are great dogs. Ours is 2 years old and full of energy. This is what she was doing when we first saw her. She's the pup on the left. Now she plays rough with Lois, our other pooch.Jim Curlee wrote: We've had chessie's for 40 years this is our first spaniel, I think we picked the wrong pup, they are full of spit and vinegar.

Re: Where are the dogs?
#306We picked Gus up Sunday afternoon, have yet to find an off switch.
Took him out in the boat last night, if he’s going to be our dog, he better like to go fishin.
He did get to lick a walleye, I think he’ll be a fisherdog too.
He’ll be a bit young this fall, but the breeder told me he’ll be ready to go grouse huntin, so we’ll take him along.
He can’t do any worse than me.
We’ve been seein a couple coveys of ruffed grouse on our place, so I’m guessing he’ll know what they are by fall.
He sure likes hassling the cats. lol

Re: Where are the dogs?
#307Whippets have a very loving disposition, are couch potatoes in the house, but love to run when outdoors. Chasing a ball, or Frisbee will keep them happy, they were bred to chase. They are easy to train, but need a little softer hand, their only fault, they can exhibit separation anxiety, they also have no real health issues. They can have an irregular heart beat at rest, but it is normal after exercise, this can confuse some vets not familiar with the breed. Some references will tell you a Whippet can run between 35 and 40 mph, a fast Whippet can exceed 50 in a short burst. I have witnessed this at a coursing meet. They used a radar gun to clock the speeds, the lure ran 50 at top speed, and two Whippets caught it. According to an older AKC dog encyclopedia, Whippets can sustain speeds up to 42, a Greyhound 37. Having a little larger yard helps. I have a 4 foot high chain link fence, and although they easily could, none of the six Whippets I have had over 40 years, has ever jumped over it.

#309Spaniels, you gotta love 'em.
We have had two American Water Spaniels, our state dog. They are hunting machines and great family companions.
Two pics of Dixie, one of her smelling the flowers, one hero picture and one of Maggie our first AWS, she was pretty unhappy with the water temps that day.

#312Hoping to get our first dog, English setter very soon. Will be our new fishing companion
Re: Where are the dogs?
#314What a little beauty Brandon. I have a very soft spot in my heart for setters. Until a couple of years ago I have had the pleasure of the company of many Gordon Setters over the last 4 decades. Setters are wonderful dogs and outstanding bird hunters.

#315Gorgeous pup, Brandon.
My setter loving heart is melting. We've had 5 - Just love 'em.
Here's our Iggy, who just turned 2:
I fish . . . not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many other concerns of men are equally unimportant--and not nearly so much fun.
