How come some reels have the size inscribed on the reels, whereas other do not.

I often wonder.

they're still making a reel they first patented in 1889 - that leaves many model years for SOP to change.
Pfluger made the Medalist for 80 years and look how many times it changed

The Perfects get more intriguing the deeper you dive into them.
