Bull dog just gave me the idea for this thread in a remark he made recently about Dingley reels which are actually fished. I'd like to start this off with a couple of shots of some favorite reels that actually catch some fish for me...

Top: Bougle' replica w/old silk line, Mickey Finn, and Mike Clark 8 footer
Mid: 3" Beaudex, Orvis 'Midge' kit rod I built to resemble a Payne(!) and the Mother of All Caddis Day hatches on the Yellowstone.
Below: Robert Hosack 6' 8" 3 wt, Baby Bougle' and a Japanese fly box filled with gorgeous classical wets by Ted Patlen,Faruk Ekich, and Bob (who ties for Mary Dette).

Carry on, youse guys!

I think it honours the makers to take their reels out on the river every so often.

Image This is a St. John in Hyduminium alloy, late '20's by Jimmy Smith (miss September in Turtledoc's '07 calendar) with a sea run Dolly Varden char on the upper Pitt river, near Vancouver BC. Image
A 3 3/8" St George, late '40's, Jimmy Smith maker on the Rio Simpson, Chile. Image A 3 3/4" wide drum Perfect, 1928-39 also by Jimmy Smith, with a Steelhead. Bulkley River, BC. Image A 3 7/8" Perfect Z marked, late '40's with Coho salmon, Squamish river, BC. Image And finally, a 3 7/8 " Perfect, early '20's with rainbow trout, Thompson River, BC.

Please excuse the cheap camera and lack of photographic talent...

A 1930s-vintage 2 7/8-inch Uniqua and a decent-sized brook trout with questionable genetics:

I would've removed him from the gene pool, but the regular season was closed and fishing was no-kill.

A 1950s last generation 3 1/8-inch Uniqua taking a break under a weak winter sun:

A 1930s-vintage 3 5/8-inch Uniqua--I've posted this photo before, but I like it Image :

Wow, some superb pics guys.

Oldfishbrain (Alex?) that's one of very few pics I've seen where an old skeleton-type reel was actually shown being fished. Very cool!!

Greg, that brookie pic is really nice. Vivid colorations.

My o' my....I can maybe see myself getting a cane to actually fish bass with at some point. Never thought I'd say that!

Jeremy.
I love clean, clear waters...

Most of the reels I use are classics but these two get hammered the most.

Would those be Dingleys and Youngs working on your Grangers? They are very handsome combinations.

Yep, the 3 1/4 Dingley is on an 8ft Premier and I'm not sure about the other reel. I bought it from a board member a few years ago, its stamped J. Dickson & Son Edinburgh and yes its on a Registered 9050 I don't own a rod I won't fish . The Dingley is a great match up for any 8040.
