Posts: 374 10/15/2008 18:30	Tags : None Ok, so we have a number of folks asking for advice and or opinions...so which one? Just out of curiosity, has anyone at any time had the same rod in all three configeration. For example....8' 5wt...one each a quad, a penta and a hex, all 8' 5wts. Even a little more bizzare made by the same builder, and possibly the same taper, only differance being a Quad, Penta and a Hex. Now I think that would be a cool comparison you could advise someone on...Which One. Has any modern day builder made the same taper in a 4,5,and 6 sided rod. Monty Montana Your Signature ... Posts: 405 10/15/2008 19:07	The biggest problem that there is in testing these 3 geometries against each other is defining what is meant by 'the same taper'. If you use the exact same flat-to-flat numbers (flat-to-apex in the case of a penta), your penta will be at least 1 line weight lighter than the hex and the quad will be at least one line weight heavier and you will have moderately different flex characteristics from tip to butt. If you start translating the tapers, you have to decide how you want to do it - volume, MOI, stress curves - and which all are results of modifying your original taper anyway. There was a gentleman at the European Rodmaker's Gathering who had made something like a dozen rods using the 'same taper' but in different configurations from 3 strip to 13 strip (?) and included all of the popular types of hollowing. I recall someone on the board having had a chance to cast them and assess the differences. I don't know in what vein he kept the tapers 'the same' though. There was also an article in the PowerFibers v28 comparing the 3 different geometries (though I disagree with some of the findings). Posts: 389 10/15/2008 19:28	I've cast all three (hex, quad and penta) Sweetgrass rods in the 7'9" 4/5wt configuration. It was a fun experience, and I liked them all. Perhaps my favorite was the quad, due to its accuracy in my hand. But I sure liked the penta on the water..it just seemed to lift line easier. Interestingly, the hex felt better than the penta to me when cast on the lawn, but the 5-sided rod really shined when the silk was on the water. Of course, this is all purely subjective and "in my hand," so take it with a grain of salt. I also could see my opinions changing if I were to get all three out fishing, side-by-side, for a few days. P.S. I also have cast the 7'6" 4/5wt hex and penta together, and the 8' 5wt hex and penta...all on the Beaverhead River right behind the Seetgrass shop.

Thanks Chris for posting the Powerfibers article about rod geometry. I went back and re-read the article and I too disagree with some of the findings there. There has been several threads about rod geometry. There seems to be two camps about how each geometry behaves. One is conjecture and one is fact. All it takes is an evening with a calculator and Roark's Book of Formulas for Stress to determind which one is correct. fishbum

Posts: 1863 10/15/2008 22:52	I don't think it matters whether you can compare directly a quad to penta to hex 8' rod with similar measurements - just that when the 8 foot rod is constructed, it casts (at least) a 5 wt (or 4 or 6 wt) well, regardless of how the tapers or flat to flat and flat to apex measurements compare. It's becoming clearer and clearer to me that those rods I have owned and own where I search and search to cast 4 wts, 5 wt, then try Wf's and silk - and really don't think any are great, are just mediocre rods (regardless of price, cache or pedigree) --- and one of the marks of a great rod is its tolerance to different lines, regardless of format.
