F.E. Thomas Special question |
Lead | ||
|
I've just picked up a 9 1/2' F.E. Thomas Special 3/2 rod with a triangle over 509 stamped in the butt. My question is should this rod have
intermediate wraps on the butt section?
Thanks Russ |

Hello Russ Take a pic of the butt section........ | #1 | ||

Does the rod appear to have original finish ?The serial is I think post 1937. This is a definite maybe without seeing the rod. or you can email me a pic. They
can be very nice rods to fish. We just need some more info via picture. Best, Paul pfarster.pnarlesky@gmail.com

Probably a post-1937 rod as Paul mentioned. As such, I would say it is less likely to have intermediates than a pre-1937 rod. You asked if it should have
intermediates on the butt section so I'll ask the obvious question - does it have intermediates on any other section?

None of the sections have intermediates and as far as refinishing have no idea as I'm a newbie with cane. I read somewhere that the triangle dated the rod
to 1937 and the 509 meant it was the 509th rod made that year but don't know if this is correct or not. The reason I asked about intermediates is I can see
very light rings at one inch intervals on the butt section. I'll try and take a few pictures and post them later . Thanks for the replies so far,Russ

Russ,
In the 2nd picture if you look closely there are faint ghosts of previous intermediates on the mid section also.In that case I feel quite certain if you use a magnifying glass and proper lighting you will find them on the tips as well.It appears as though the rod has been refinished and the person doing so didn't want to replace all those intermediates. It is tedious doing them but if the rod is to be restored to original, they should be replaced. Will Looking at the 1st pic again and for a longer time I can see some ghosting where they were on the tips as well.

The triangle definitley dates it to a post 1937 rod. You would need the FE Thomas build records to find the actual build date. The only copy I know of rests
with Marty Keane. I understand that his health is not good so it may be a problem getting the page copied and sent to you. He has done that for my FE Thomas
Browntones. If you don't see any ghosts of intermediates, then I suspect there were none. Greendrake eyes are better than mine but I do see what may be
ghosts on the butt section.

I'll take it outside for a better look next sunny day, probably some time in June the way things are going. Russ
