Lead | ||

A friend game me his father's old Sport King 9' 3/2 bamboo rod, and I would like to know who manufactured these rods for Wards.
Thanks |

Photos would help.
H&I made most of the Sport King bamboo rods for Montgomery Ward but I have seen some Montagues and South Bends including doublebuilts made for them too. It's hard to say for sure without photos. Regards and WDE!! Bob L. " To me, it's a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, "Hey, can you give me a hand with this?" You can say, "Sorry, got these sacks." --Robert Earl James |

do you know the model number? I have a 51 catalog.
Here's a Sport King M 27 combo rod, which is the same as the H-I Black River ![]() ![]() ![]() oh yeah - I found a Black River linen bag to go with it. |

Thank you both for the help. I don't have a digital camera so I can't post photos, and the rod has been rewraped and varnished -- only the Wards Sport King label remains intact.

I came across an old Wards catalogue yesterday - it listed this rod as a Model 33, 6.2 oz for D level or HEH DT line. But, still no clue as to the maker.

Horrocks-Ibbotson. It's a relabeled Black River.

The reel seat is all metal, chrome finish downlocking, and it has identical tip sections and decent quality pinned ferrules, so don't think it is an H-I Black River as shown earlier in this thread. My guess was that Montague made it, but that's only a guess.

It's not a coincidence that the reel seat/grip is a match for the Balck River rod I sold a couple of years ago, nor is it a coincidence that it is packed in a cloth bag marked HI Black River. When time allows I'll scan the H-I catalog page and post it.

Does anyone have a full list of the Sport King models. I have what I think is a Tonka Prince with the remains of a Sport King label and it is marked M71. The
tip is down about 5" but it still casts fairly well. It came in a cardboard tube labeled "Fibre-glass fishing rod No. June Lake 7 ft." Someone
has marked HI in the label. There was an H-I, No. 7 automatic fly reel with it.

Sport King (Wards) Rods... | #10
|
Waltryan1,
I don't have this model documented yet, but I have the beginnings of a Wards trade rod conversion chart. I'm starting with the Montague-made models, and working my way from there, as I get time. You might post some pictures of your rod to see if anybody can make a positive ID. If someone does, I can add it to my conversion chart. If anyone else out there has some Wards rods, or even a partial list of Sport King models, I'd like to know about it too. . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

When I started this thread nearly 2 1/2 years ago I didn't have a digital camera and wouldn't have been able to post photos if I had.
Now I do - but I still don't know who made my 9' 3/2 Sport King, although I guess it to be a Montague. This is the only rod I've ever tried to refinish -- back in 1976. I don't recall the color or style of the original wraps, but the ferrules, grip, seat and decal are original.

Montague Made Wards Trade Rod... | #12
|
Now you're back in my comfort zone...
This rod is definitely a Montague made trade rod. The hardware suggests late 40's to early 50's, and it was a Sunbeam, Clipper or Flash production model. If it had the original windings, I may be able to narrow it down to which of these it was. I'll add this one to my conversion chart, and keep an eye out for one with the signature windings. Thanks! So, there you have it! Mystery solved after 33 years! Very sharp pictures, by the way. You seem to have mastered the digital camera. . . . Rex TheMontyMan Got a mystery Monty, drop me a line... |

Wards, Sport King M/71 | #13
|
I know this is several years late but I just picked up a 7' 2/1 Sport King what appears to be model M/71. From pics on the online auction I thought it
would at least be equivalent to H-I Pocono 7'. To my delight it is the same action as the Tonka Prince. In fact the guide spacing and action is identical
to the Prince. However, wraps are identical to the Pocono - they both lack the hook keeper and wrap of the Prince. Wrap color on the Prince and Pocono are the
same dark bluish/black while the Sport King is clearly a dark green. Will post pics when I figure out how!

Ron,
Nice line-up of rods there!! It's great to see a trade rod side-by-side with the manufacturer's model like this. I'll add this model to my conversion chart. Thanks for posting the pics! . . . Rex TheMontyMan |
