57clemson and I will be in West Yellowstone the week after Labor Day with a small contingent from the Carolinas. It will be my first trip to Montana, and I am like a little kid in a 45 year old body. If anyone would suggest some patterns for that time and general area, it would be greatly appreciated. |

Stop in at Graig Mathews " Blue Ribbon Flies " they get you on to right flies and pick up some Shopfac size 16 nymphs for droppers. I live in the
area and fish the Madison regularily and catch more fish with Shopfac than any other pattern. Eric gave you some great patterns but I would add Para Adams
& Royal Wulff paterns for both the Madison and Gallatin. Soft hackles are my favorites on the Madison & Firehole in the Park during the fall.

firehole wrote:Right on with the Blue Ribbon recommendation as well as the Para Adams and Royal Coachman. I'd go a step further on Blue Ribbon and say, "Just call them." and get their suggestions rather than wait to stop in, especially if you want to do some tying on your own. I didn't think of the Shopvac, as I normally don't go that route -- always looking for stuff on top.:-) EP |

Jay,
Finally got the pic. I'll post a pic of one and hopefully my memory of its photobucket link is correct. Here we go. Dennis Size 16 #135 Dai-Riki scud/pupa hook, 3/32 beadhead, gold wire wrapped thru pheasant tail and tuff of white zelon or polypro. You can also do it in other dyed pheasant tail colors too.

Eric Peper and Firehole,
Thanks for the tips. I try to tie all of my flies, but that is not chisled in stone. I am sure that we will be in the shop for gear and information. I think that there will be five or six of us traveling loosely together, and I think that I am the only one in the group that has not been to Montana. I can hardly wait. |

Looks like a Srendipity with a twist.
Although I fish with nymphs 95% of the time I'e never caught anything with those Serendipity (nor a Sparkle pupa). I know they were a hit many years ago on the Madison. But I'll try this one this spring. |

Jay,
It's a twist of the serentipidy but recently developed 3-4 years ago by Blue Ribbon . I've fished Madison with serentipidies from their inception in the early 90's but this twist is the most consistent producer. Bows & Browns love them not just on the Madison but also on the Clarkfork, Gallatin and Missouri. In the spring to mid-July I nymph rig them with a Prince but when dry fly season gets going I fish it as dropper off a dry. More times than not the Shopfac is taken than the dry. Dennis |

I'm taking a bunch of these for my trip to Germany & Austria this spring.
I'll try them with my usual nymphs and see how they compare. |

I plan to be in the West Yellowstone area the week after Labor Day. I can't wait - it's my first time to fish that area.
Pat "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly
fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."

Tied a half a dozen of those Shopfacs.
I'll be off for a one-day-trip to Germany in two weeks. I'll toss them in the river Kyll.

I am actually MOVING to Mammoth Hot Springs in the fall. My wife took a job at Yellowstone, and she is moving there on 15 April. So I guess I have you guys
beat!
I figure it will be pretty nice to be 5 minutes from great fly fishing. I have never had that before. I also just finished up my first bamboo fly rod, so I hope to catch my first trout on home made bamboo in the park! (this is my first post, so I figured I would make it a bragging post) Patrick |

I can see that I'm going to have trouble keeping enough of them hidden from my fishing buddies to take to MT. It's easy to tie, VERY effective, thank you for turning me on to a great pattern. |

Firehole,Your post brought up a funny memory, Jesse. On my first trip to the West Yellowstone area (about 35 years ago), the hot fly for our group was a black stonefly nymph that I'd developed. We had a group of 7, and only two of us tied. I think my buddy and I tied about 12 dozen of those d*mned flies over a 5 day stay. Thank goodness it, too, was a simple fly to tie. Altho' I think we about ran Bud Lilly out of black yarn and lead wire. EP |

Tarheel,
I'm glad the pattern was quite effective for you and be sure to fish it as a dropper in the Madison and the Gallatin. Hopefully, we can hook up when I get back from my Alaska trip after Sept 9th but in case we don't enjoy yourself on my local Yellowstone waters. Our snowpack is great around 110-115% so the rivers and streams will have plenty of water throughout the summer into fall. Dennis |
