I must say, in the overall, I would agree with the vast majority of their picks.
Fun to try and make a list and then check it against theirs. These are not trout flies only.

I cannot believe the Pheasant Tail didn't make the list.

I wonder what John Alden Knight would say when he saw that the "Mickey Finn" didn't make this list?

Interesting list. Some were not patterns, simply names; e.g., rusty spinner and blue winged olive, for which there may be as many as a dozen or more different
pattern variations. Others were designs; e.g., sparkle dun, which will yield as many variations as there are mayflies. My reaction is that trying to
formulate this kind of list is like trying to name the 10 most beautiful women in the world. A mandate would be having 51% of the viewers agree with half your
choices. IOW, a fruitless task at best, and kinda silly at worst.

bobbeegee wrote:I agree that they are fun, if only to see what someone else is thinking. I suspect in my curmudgeonhood the scope of my flyfishing has become so narrow (dries and unweighted wets to wild trout) that I find broad lists like this of interest but (to me) of marginal value. I suspect to that my cynical view was due partly to my opinion that the flies were rather poorly tied.

Looking at that list, I think Field & Stream needs to stick to deer and turkey hunting. They obviously don't know much about what are productive flies
the world over.

Some of those flies are so poorly tied that they border on embarrassing, ie; black ghost, Hare's Ear Nymph, most of the dries; Some are very well tied
(bass bug, Clouser minnow). . Conspicuously missing: Pheasant Tail Nymph, Marabou Muddler, Kaufman's Stonefly, LaFontaine Sparkle Pupa and Emerger. Nymphs
in general are seriously under represented

I would have to agree with Joel and other previous comments.
Not only are many of the flies pretty poorly tied, but some differ greatly from the original pattern--e.g. Sparkle Dun. And as for the omission of the PT Nymph...you've got to be kidding! But a foam spider makes the list? Where's the Chernobyl Ant? I guess that's why I haven't subscribed to Field & Stream, Outdoor Life or Sports Afield for decades. It's impossible to be all things to all people--and do it well. Regards, Flyman

A different approach . . . | #10 | ||
|
For the upcoming fishing season, I'm going to try a different tactic. In the past, I would have studied this list of Top 25 Greatest and tried many of
them, but it never has seemed to work. So this year, the Top 25 Best goes out the window, and my new approach will be my guide. This year, I'm going to
fish the Top 25 Best Fly Names flies - I don't care what they look like as long as they have an awesome name. When
you've got fly names like Haul a Gwynt or Midnight Rustler or Red-arsed Bastard or Booby Blobby, how can you possibly not catch trout! At the top of my
list will be the always exciting and ever dependable Red Butt Yellow Sally.
I know I won't do any worse than using F&S's list, plus I'm sure I'll be able to impress any other anglers who might ask what I have on the end of my line. Dean D

How things change...there was a series of articles about 1920 in one of the national magazines asking thirty of the top anglers in America to list the top five
flies they fished with. Then they asked them to explain why they made their choices. Hearing Herb Welch, Charles Antoine, Robert Page Lincoln, Dixie Carrol,
etc. explain their "Top 5" was a fascinating glimpse into the minds of truly outstanding fly tiers and fishermen. When I get some free time in the
future I'll dig the articles out (I think it was a three or four-part article but can't remember where it was from) and post them.

Well you know we are not supposed to agree 100% with this or any other list. Me personally, I would have had the Adams listed first, the ant second, and since I
don't for nymph fishing too much, I would have added the the Mosquito, and the Hornberg streamer..and come to think of it, let me recheck that list..I
don't remember the Quill Gordon listed..surely I just missed it!

Mary Orvis Marbury had quite a list in "Favorite Flies" after all that's part of the polling that she and her father did in 1890ish |

I would have a hard time with 25 favorite flies anyway. I mainly fish wild trout waters and I can stock my box with about 6 different flies each season and be
perfectly happy. If I add blue gill and bass to the mix. give me a couple extra poppers and maybe a clouser or two and I'll catch fish. Even with
tailwater fishing there are only a handful of time tested patterns that I stick to. I think with 25 flies your likely to get at least most everyone's
favorite flies in there, but if they limited it to 10 or so I think we would really see how off they are.

huh.
not a single traditional wet in the bunch? It is an "All-Time" list, correct? so far this Spring, this would be my #1:

that.
