Nick, your spigot is very interesting.
What is the thickness of the wall of the female? The male is completely in bamboo?
I have done many experiments with a similar system but the male was destroyed
.
You'll be at the European Gathering in Sarnen in September?

HI Alberto
For the wall thickness I used .04" And the spigot is 3.92" * .189", the male is made completely from bamboo but on the next one, I think I will make the section hollow and insert a piece of carbon rod. I should add that the taper is based on a Brunner rod and that it is a staggered ferrule the rod is 75" long and the ferrule station is at 45" from the tip so there is plenty of bamboo there. Where did you have your ferrules? I have one in the drying cupboard now that is based on a CC de France which I hexroded to a one piece but made it as a three piece blank for the ferrules I am using precicion carbon rod, I have used no swell whatsoever at the ferrule stations but I have put a small nickel silver ring at the end of each ferrule like on the Brunner rod I am gluing the carbon rod into one side of the ferrule, I used ferrule tite so that if the spigot or carbon rod does break then it is very easy to replace. Yes I will definitely be in Sarnen in September. Nick |

Hallo Alberto,
I was shure, you would be interested in this type of ferrule. Short after the European Gathering last year with your streamlined ferrule as one of the most interesting topics, I was discussing with the German rodmaker Robert Stroh the next step. We endet up with the result of an "integrated streamlined" spigot. No more swell in the rod and therefore less influence on the action. The problem, that with lighter rods, and perhaps even 3 piece, you end up with very thin spigots, or in other words no more practical for fishing. By streamlining (swelling) the spigot , we gain nearly 1 mm in diameter, the female part of the ferrule, at this point, has a wall thikness of only .5mm, for the rest, depending on the line weight, 0.9 to 1.2 mm. I add a picture, the rod slightly apart, so you can recognize the swell http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww320/Phisi/H-1.jpg I'm fishing my first rod with this system now since last September without any problem. The spigot is reinforced (how I will show to you at the Italian Gathering next month)! Just to show the nice effects of adding hardly weight to the blank with this system, I hope to have my 5 piece (!) "Traveller" 7'6 , line #4/5 ready for the Gathering. In US, Tim Anderson has build this year a rod with a similar type of spigot. He used a piece of carbon to reinforce the spigot. I look foreward to the interesting discussions in Italy! Philipp |

Hi Nick, Hi Philipp,
the discussion of the non-conventional ferrules is very interesting. The purpose of my speech last year this was to provoke discussion. Many rodmakers in many countries I have developed this idea and many rodmakers have had very good results. I hope to be able to give some reeds "streamlined" carried out by a very good Italian rodmaker: Nicola Bonesini from Verona (home of Amarone wine) and Luciano Oltolini from Milan. I believe that the program of the Italian gathering (Nick, you come in Italy?) will be on this subject : "the non-conventional ferrule", and you we talk of your experiences. Alberto |

Hi guys
Philipp it seems you have used the actual swell for the female and made the spigot tapered to fit? very nice, even less length of ferrule and less change to the action. Wish I could be in Italy for your meeting but if I got to more than one in a year, my other half will murder me. Nick |

I'm about to put the finishing touches on a couple of rods.
The first one is a 7' 6" 3 piece 3 wt. Sweet little stick, red windings, amboyna filler, all blackened hardware. The second one, also a 7'6" 3 piece rod, is a 4 weight, wrappped clear with cinnamon single thread accent wraps, Thuya Burl filler and all polished bright hardware. All hardware is mine, except the guides. These still need a little work. Another coat of varnish on the reel seats, one more final coat on the 3 wt rod. They'll be complete and shipped within the next 3 weeks. Bob

Tyler,
Love your choice of Box Elder for the seat. I have a special feeling/appreciation for both Box Elder and a close relative, the Lilacs. Love both the woods!! Nice job. Jeremy. |

Very, very, nice Al!
You struck a chord with me as I particularly like finishes applied with a brush, especially tung oil. The reel seats are also to my liking, as I very much like the threads on yours. Spanish cedar, in my opinion, is the perfect complement to bamboo. The nine footer for an eight is most interesting. I'll send you a PM. Bob Go Heels!!!

I hesitate to put this in here amongst these great works of art, but I am a little bit proud of it. It is rod #001, and one that was not planned to get to this
state. This is the result of my practice splitting, which I used to practice straightening, which I then used to test my beveler and binder, and so on. One day
I realized that I had a blank with 6 sides and the glimmerings of a decent action, so I tried building a down-locking reel seat and fought with silk thread
until I now have something that I'll take out to the Little Red tomorrow and see if a fish can break it. Rod #2 visited the trash bin after the cane turned
out to be rotten, but #3 goes to final tapering in couple of days.

Geary,
The tapers of those two rods are adaptations of #208 and #204 tapers, planed on forms with 5" centers, and altered to use Super Swiss ferrules. I make an effort to capture key slope changes, and I check dimensions at locations away from the 5" increments. Swells are done separately. I own most of the original rods that I try to replicate. I don't want to exagerate my limited experience there at the Payne shop. I was very young, and although I learned alot, it probably doesn't even belong on my "resume". I had the opportunity to cast many Payne rods of various vintages, including salmon rods, and I owned 3 trout rods early on. I thought that they were great casting and fishing rods, and that they were beautiful. I kept trying to find a Leonard 38H that I liked to cast but never succeeded. |

I recently finished a 6'6" 4wt from a Payne taper sent to me by a friend who owned the original. I've made 5 or 6 of these so far and it's
become one of my favorite tapers. This makes an ideal mountain stream rod and we have no shortage of mountain streams here in Durango. As much as I would like
to keep this one for myself, I really need to sell it, so it's listed here in the Classifieds.
