Looks like a good collection, Monty Man. What line do you use on that old 8 1/2-foot Redwing?

Line for old 8'6" Red Wing Light Trout... | #382
|
Teter,
I use a 3 wt. modern line on my 1920's vintage Red Wing Light Trout rod, and it casts like a dream. This rod casts and fishes on the light side of a 3 wt. I used it a lot last summer. She's the one on the far left of my Red Wing selection pictured on my profile. She has the old nickel silver sliding band reel seat, and the old, smaller Montague label. I never even cleaned up the cork after buying this one. I just put it in the rod case, and headed out to the river. What most people don't know is that there is a BIG difference between the Light Trout, Medium Trout and Bass Weight models in the Monty Line. The Medium Trout weights are the most common. The weight designation was only printed on the rod tube label and/or the rod sock label. Probably 90% of these old rods that are still around don't have either label remaining, so it's hard to tell what you have. A Medium Trout model in an 8'6" would probably throw a 5 or 6 wt. line. Ted,
Thanks for the information on what line to use on the Orvis Flea that I just added to my collection....... I have another questions.... which Orvis rod do you like better the Superfine or the Rocky Mountain? If you were going to use an Orvis bamboo rod to fish wet flies which rod would you select out of all the Orvis rods made? Thanks |

Orvis bamboo rod to fish wet flies which rod would you select out of all the Orvis rods made?
I'd suggest the 8 1/2' 4 5/8 ounce rod with 16 - 10 ferrules. Slow action, nice open loops for multi fly setups. It's best with a 6 line although Orvis suggested a 7. which Orvis rod do you like better the Superfine or the Rocky Mountain? I prefer the 7' Superfine. I have not tried the 6 foot or 6 1/2 foot Superfine rods. Of course the RM is three piece which can be convenient. The Rm I used for a while was best with a 6 WF line. Retrospectively I wish I had had one with me last winter in Chile instead of a 7/4 which wasn't enough gun in the wind on those creeks.

Ted,
First I want to say that's a Very Nice Fly Rod and a nice catch!!! Thanks for the advice on the Orvis Superfine. I have been looking for one but it's like pulling teeth trying to find real nice Superfine 7ft. 2pc. 2 tips. I know where there is one but it has grip roughness at the nose from the guy parking hooks and some fading of the bluing on the female ferrule. The grip roughness would have to be repaired and there asking $795. My guess it would cost me few more $$$ to get it repaired so I walked away from the rod because of it. I don't know if this old retired Army CW5 will live long enough to find a real nice one!!! |

Buy the one in front of you | #390
|
A prolific collector once advised me: if you can afford it, buy the one in front of you and keep it until a better example comes along.
So, you might want to grab the rod while you can. Fish and enjoy. Life is too short to quibble over a hundred bucks. You'll probably waste that much (time = money) looking for the perfect example...I certainly have. (lunchtime philosophy and worth what you paid, maybe less)

Excellent Monty Collection! | #391

Looks like you might possibly have more than me... which is hard for me to believe, but I stop at only rods with NS ferrules.
The early Flipline 8.5' rods have a taper and cast very similar to a 8.5' Leonard. This is another diamond in the rough. I've yet to find one in excellent condition. The post WWII Fliplines are ordinary. |

Well Ric, this is a bit of a tall order but fun to guess. I'm guessing you popped for the Brandin on Bud's site. One could also surmise by your
collection and the rods you have on order that you really have a penchant for seven sixers. Plus you have an abundance on some makers so losing one from say
Walt Carpenter wouldn't hurt too much. But still, giving up four rods of this quality for one Brandin hhhmmmm. And knowing Bud he's going to want
quality in return. So...........................
I would say 7' Bradford, 8' Bradford, 8' Carpenter, 7' Maxwell. But I'm probably way off Dan |

A really great collection Rex, in such a short time! It took me years to find a good Trail rod. I have a few not listed in your collection... I have a Manitou
bait rod with a black Landman style seat. I also have the Powerbuilt #50. I've never seen/heard of a 8' Rapidan. I've also missed out on the
8.5' light trout rods. I think I might have another unusual Manitou... It might be a saltwater rod... I don't exactly remember...
I probably have 4-5 Radio rods which are said to be Monty's. I dunno, their windings and fancy knurling are among the best I've ever seen. Unfortunately they all need restoration and they all have full intermediates and beautiful signature butt wraps that are quite intricate and well beyond my patience level to restore.

Darrelll,
You have some sweet ones in your collection, and I'll bet some of your unknown rods are gems waiting to be re-discovered. I've never actually seen a Powr-Built 50, and have not even seen good pictures of one. I'd love to see pics of yours. I'd also like to see pictures of any Manitou. Not many of those floating around, as you know. I've seen 2 8' Rapidans, but was not able to pick them up. I've bought 3 rods off eBay that were advertised as 8 footers, but were mis-advertised, and I sent them back. I remember a thread from a while back talking about short Monty production rods. At this point, I believe there are at least 20 production models that were made in lengths of 8' or less. I'd love to pick up a 7'6" Manitou. I'm sure they're out there. Some 9' rods were built in a Light Trout taper as well. I have a 9' Light Trout Red Wing from the late 1920's. I've added another 20 or so rods to my collection since that posting. Most of my recent additions are high-end, previously undocumented models from the Varney era. At the moment, I'm glad that most people don't value a good Monty like I do.

My bamboo collection is starkly modest compared with some I've seen on this forum, but here goes:
6"6" two/two 5 weight Sewell Dunton "Angler's Choice" #162, one of his high-end models and my first bamboo, bought in 1971 for $150 at a Maryland sports shop. 7'6" two/two 4 weight Sewell Dunton "The Favorite"; says on tube rod was put up by Thomas & Thomas, apparently soon after T&T took over Dunton's shop (they verified this on a visit to their shop).. First class fittings. 9' three/two 6 weight F.E. Thomas Dirigo. 8'6" three/two 5 weight F.E. Thomas Special. 9' three/two 9 weight Sewell Dunton "Premium" bought from Leonard factory as new (don't know how they wound up with it).. First class fittings. 6' three/two 2 weight A. Noland (a western Maryland maker).. Ordered an 8'6" three/two 5 weight from him over two years ago with a hefty deposit, but so far haven't received it and have lost track of him (in frustration, bought the Thomas above). 7"6" two/two 6 weight Orvis Battenkill, inherited from a deceased relative. 7'6" two/one 6 weight Sewell Dunton D-137, probably one of the rods put up by T&T in early years from English blanks. High class fittings and appears new; got it at a fly-fishing show last year for $350. 9' three/one J.C. Higgins inherited from a relative. No idea who made it but probably Montague or H-I. Has decent ferrules and all-metal sliding ring real seat. 6'6" two/two 3 weight Zhus Rod bought from factory in China out of curiosity for $150. Found it very well-made with high-quality nickel silver ferrules and reel seat hardware and good quality cork. Casts very well. At the same time for $90 I bought from Zhus a classic-style reel (appears to be a Bodgan or Peerless copy) that is exceptionally well-made. I was so impressed I subsequently ordered a larger version at the same price. The two I use the most are the 7'6" 4 weight Dunton in smallish streams and the 8"6" 5 weight F.E. Thomas in larger ones.. Both are medium soft actions, which I favor, and cast very well. |
