A Store-Branded Granger (?) |
Lead | ||
|
I haven't located any particulars on this one and hope some of you Learned Ones will have comments. It is an 8 1/2 foot rod with 3 lines of ink stamping on
the flats as follows: "STORE FOR MEN / MARSHALL FIELD & CO. / TWO STRIPER" That's it. The shrink wrap sleeve protecting the cork is imprinted
"Wright and McGill / Granger Rods" but there are no permanent marks claiming a Granger heritage or W&M authorship. There is no stamping on the
reel seat. I've been calling it "a Granger" but am not entirely sure I should. The kinship is pretty obvious to the eye. I did find one reference
to a rod marked "One Striper," which gave me the idea there was probably a "Three Striper" out there somewhere to make up a Marshall
Field's version of a "Good/Better/Best" classification. Whatever, it is a nice rod and well finished up. The wrappings are all gold, which makes
me wonder if might have been toward the upper end of the W&M's grading system, rather than the low end one might expect with store branding. The Two
Striper theme is presented rather elegantly with a pair of narrow gold windings at about the 13 inch mark, and two more pairs that flank a decorative winding
at about 19 inches. Additionally, a pair of finely engraved "stripes" circumscribe each male and each female ferrule. Each tip-top shows similar
lines that didn't inscribe too well. The "stripes" on the shrink wrap could have been "special" too, I'm not sure. [If somebody has
a good idea about how to get pictures or an album to move in here, I might try it your way!]

Wright and McGill made three rods for Marshall Field. The One Striper was equivalent to the Victory grade, the Two to the Special, and the Three to the
Aristocrat.
Email me your photos and I will post them here.........rgoins5ATtriadDOTrr.com. Bob Go Heels!!! |

The 8642 taper is one of the worlds all time great 5wt tapers. That should be a great casting rod! Enjoy. I have a one striper but the plastic on the grip
and one of the tips was long gone by the time it made it to me. These are classier than the basic trade rods (but they make great fishing rods in the 7-8.5 ft
tapers too) Now carefully slit that plastic on the grip and save it but take the old girl fishing like she deserves!!!

My Marshall Field Two Striper is one of the first bamboo rods I've owned. Nowhere on the rod or tube does the name "Granger" or "Wright
McGill" appear, except for the now long gone plastic wrap on the grip. No stamping on the reel seat. The Marshall Field and Two Striper inscriptions
are inscribed in neat copperplate-like type. Your gold wraps might have been lime green at one time. Mine are lime and over time have started to turn into a
rich gold color. The varnish and finish on the rod are impeccable and I always wondered if Granger gave special attention to its Marshall Field rods. I
second Marty's view on the 8642 taper. Hard to beat. Casts beautifully and catches lots of fish. Put it to good use. If, like me, your hometown is
Chicago and you remember the Marshall Field Store for Men with that 12 ft. tall stuffed grizzly, all the better!

Thanks for the offer Bob. I couldn't make your URL work with either my old computer or the one I'm trying to break to ride. I seem to have an
"album" in there somewhere but couldn't make it move and the Help section refused my password, and so on !!!
Damned contraptions. My email is gg@cox.net if that will help anything. It's getting a little late in the game but perhaps someone would like to see the thing. Thanks to all for the great comments. Silvernail |

While I would also suggest that the rod was made for fishing, but today it has collector value since it is mint. To use it or to cut the plastic wrapper from
the grip would greatly decrease its value to a collector. I would collect it as is or sell it and with only part of the cash received purchase a decent used
8'6" Granger. There's lots of used Grangers and few unfished mint rods. Your call.

OldCanerods wrote:I was just thinking the same thing..... BTW, Silvernail, the only marking on that rod that has significance for the "Two-Striper" is the two green stripes just above the store name. All the rest are typical W&M Granger markings and wraps. (The mid-butt wrap and the two incised bands on the ferrules and tip-tops are the ones that are typical.)

Thanks to everyone for your help and comments. I have decided to make this virgin available on That Auction so someone else gets to decide what to do with the
Granger shrink-wrap. I'll get it listed today or tomorrow. With some luck (X-Fingies/Knock Wood) I may break even on this deal and can fish with another
stick. If not, well, it will be a form of martyrdom - right? I'm an old geezer and no longer very active at either bothering fish or collecting Stuff.
Nevertheless, this affair has sparked a little more interest in fishin' bamboo. I'll be getting some of that done. Thanks a heap. Your wisdom,
perspicacity and discourse are much appreciated.

Might I suggest trying to sell it here first. If you put it on that auction site, some heathen might get a hold of it instead of the respectful collector you
hope will buy it.

A 4-Striper recently sold on the auction site. I believe it was wrapped as a Favorite.

Hey guys - Thanks for the thoughts. Yeh, I considered a local listing but didn't know what to ask without the risking an even bigger reputation as the
idiot who sold too cheap or the stuffed shirt who wanted too much. The trouble with open auctions is that it always depends on who shows up. High bidders for
unique items can almost always thank their lucky stars that someone with a bigger roll or a bigger 'want' wasn't there that day. In any event, I am
no salesman and prefer to let buyers hash out 'values' when I'm in doubt. In this case, I guess part of the 'value' in question is the
choice between hanging it up or bothering fish with it... and I pass it along with good cheer.

FYI Granger sometimes forgot to mark the reels with Wright & McGill, 1938 Patent date and Denver Colorado per my conversation with Dick Spurr. Your reel
IMHO is original considering it's mint. I know about not marking my mint 8040 Registered has a chromium reel seat(unique to Registered's) isn't
marked either.

Granger Registered fittings | #15 | ||
|
According to the 1948 Wright & McGill Granger catalog, the Wright & McGill Registereds had a "German silver" (nickel silver) reel seat and
ferrules.
On the other hand, my early Goodwin Granger Registered (#19399) has the chromium-plated up lock reel seat and ferrules. They are distinctively different in appearance and can't be readily polished like the standard n/s fittings. But then, they don't tarnish or discolor due to the hard plating.

Flyman |
