I haven't posted here for a while. , but an age old question
has driven me here. If any group could answer this question it would be this bunch. I am restoring an EW Edwards Autograph De Luxe (Filbert St. or early Mt
Carmel period) rod. I only need to replace two guides, one stripping and one snake. I have had no difficulty matching the wrap color (purple brown) but the
tipping (gold) is so light (blonde) that I don't seem to have a thread that will match it, nor do I see any YLI or Pearsall's thread to match. I have
quite a few tips to wrap, so I want replacements that match well.
Has anyone done an EW Edwards who would like to share information on this? It is too nice a rod to do an average job on.
Doug,
Can't help you with the correct original colors, but wondered if the original color you're having trouble matching might have been white, yellowed by
time/sun/varnish ambering. If that's the case, you could tint the varnish and, if necessary, apply it just to the tipping to get a match. Have you pulled
off a thread to look at the underside? I've found that helpful sometimes to get a truer picture of the actual color.
Bob, I think that it probably is pongee. I have never been sure what thread under what color preserver gives the famous pongee color. I do think I have the
threads that you suggested Tim. I will check them out I may have passed them over for no good reason. Pete, I generally find that tinting results in darker
color, however I did once tint a water based polyurethane to make a gold nylon thread to match the gold wraps on a Heddon. I really appreciate your thoughts. I
am also hoping that one of the Edwards collectors might comment.
I had never had the experience of looking over an EW Edwards high end rod from the Fillbert St./Mt Carmel era. The rod is so unassuming but so well made. The
ferrules blow me away with their elegance.
You shouldn't have too much trouble finding them. I used to sell vintage silk thread and still have hundreds of vintage colors and most all listed in
Sinclairs great color chart, if you can't find what you are looking for, contact me.
Try Belding Corticelli #5010, which they call "Pongee", with thinned shellac (1 1/2-2 lb. cut). I'm not sure if clear or orange shellac would
look best -- I'd have to see the thread.
I didn't think to check Mike Sinclair's chart. However some of his choices didn't work for me. As for vintage thread. Yes, I do sometimes use
thinned shellac I will try your suggestion. Hi, Darrell, I have gotten thread from you before. I haven't looked at your selection lateley. I will check
your web site. Thanks atain for all your suggestions. I have a lotof stuf to try. I guess I'll go down into my shop and start working.
