Posts: 134 07/09/2009 12:50	Tags : None A few months ago I acquired a Hardy CC de France in a 7'6" 2/2 configuration... the rod's full length, etc... except it's missing a snake guide on each tip which need to be replaced... i have replacement guides and I've done a number of test wraps to find an appropriate color silk to do the fix... as i'm examining the rod though, i'm finding many wraps are dried out and guides are loose (some barely, others are very)... the varnish on the flat's is in great shape but the wraps look like they could use some attention... would you: A) replace the missing guides and leave it at that B) replace the missing guides and revarnish the remaining wraps to secure them C) replace the missing guides, while also removing the old wraps and replacing them while maintaining the original varnish on the rod itself also, there's the issue of silk color... the original silk wraps were basically white and color preserved (appear opaque) but now appear a nice gold color due to the varnish aging... if i replace all of the wraps, would you do the original color (slightly off-white) w/ CP (lacquer or shellac) which doesnt look as eye pleasing (to me at least).... or would you do a off-white/pale yellow w/ CP which maintains the more pleasing look of the aged varnish but w/ new silk... in the pic below you can see the missing guide wrap and the aged wrap w/ some of the original silk color sticking out (where the varnish is missing) decision, decisions... I look forward to any thoughts... -matt

Posts: 123 07/09/2009 13:31	Personally, I would rewrap and replace all of the guides and use your last option for the thread, "off-white/pale yellow w/ CP which maintains the more pleasing look of the aged varnish but w/ new silk". This would give you a more consistent look and IMHO, if you do a careful enough job with the wraps it won't hurt your resale value. Everybody knows guides wear out and need to be replaced.

Posts: 135 07/09/2009 20:27	Canewrap, Thanks for the reply... that's the scenario I was thinking... new question to ponder... when is a refinish too good? I'm thinking about color preservers... i can use a new product like Al's Color Rite and get a nice even finish that really protects the wraps and keeps the color OR i can replicate the slight blotchy appearance of the original using a lacquer... what's the ideal, a refinished rod that has perfect wraps or a rod that's more in tune w/ the original but not as "perfect"... again, i'm leaning towards the latter... seems the perfect wraps would be more of a "refinish" but the replication of the original would be "restored"... perhaps i'm overanalyzing this considering its my rod and i don't think i'm selling anytime soon... i just want to get it "right" :-) -matt

Posts: 211 07/10/2009 08:36	Hookjaw, I'm pretty certain the CC de France had invisible wraps - white silk plus varnish, no cp! The white colour is due to the varnish drying out again. My test for the presence of CP is to put a drop of acetone on the wrap - if the silk goes translucent, no cp - if it just goes a bit darker then CP. Old CP seems to outlast varnish for some reason. I'd strip & refinish the whole rod, with new white silk and a really nice varnish finish. If you sent the rod to Hardy and said 'fix this' that's what they would do. Nice rod, by the way - almost my favourite! (That's the 8' CC de France...) Good luck Stuart
