Are the values for the 8 1/2' Payne 204L posted in any of the taper databases? I can't seem to find it.
Thanks, Geary |

There is the taper for a 204L (8'6" 3pc 5wt) in Gould's Tips & Tapers.

Thanks, Jay. I've been told the Gould taper is a bit different than the one you referred to. Some folks have suggested that the 204L is a 4-wt, but it
looks more like a 5 to me.

I've got 2/3 of a Payne 204 (204 so marked on the rod bag tag - rod is missing it's butt section) that I purchased years ago from the Phil Snyder
estate. I've emailed Harry Boyd regarding getting the late 1/3 made up for me. Does the taper for the 204 also exist somewhere?

I have a Payne 204L, 3/2 but I would say its a 5-6 wt. rod. In fact more on the 6 wt. side.

Interesting. Mine is definitely a 4-weight. It's pretty old; maybe the taper was modified over the years.

Hi Guys, 4wt. because it has a 4/64's tip top and because it fishes a 4wt. so well. That it is a 204L rather than a plain ol' 204 makes it so. Jay

OldCanerods wrote:To answer your question, yes the taper is listed on several of the rod databases. There are differences in the tapers listed. If you send the rod to Harry Boyd, he'll mic it and figure out what to do for the 1/3 you're missing. I've put links to some of the various databases below. No problem at all, Aransas or OldCanerods. And I look forward to examining this rod up close and personal.

Hi Guys, I posted this taper on this board a while ago. I got it from a rod I own that I got from Hoagy. It needed full restoration so the numbers are on an
unvarnished rod. I think I measures all three flats. Lemme know if you still need it. Jay Edwards

Hi Guys, Here is the taper. There was some de-lam on one tip so it's not included. I averaged the three flat measurements.
0-.064 5-.076 10-.092 15-.102 20-.122 25.-140 30-.152 33-.155 33 1/2-.151 34-.147 Mid 35 1/2-.165 40-.178 45-.191 50-.208 55-.224 60-.236 65-.245 66-.244 Butt 70-.266 75-.277 80-.293 85-.307 90-.322 91-.333 92-.352 92 1/2-.367 I have other notes and stuff. I bought and restored the rod in 1980. I fished it before the work and caught big browns while wading deep snow on the Roaring Fork in North Park Colorado. It was April. I remember 'cause the show where I bought it was in Southfield Michigan in late March. I'm lucky I didn't crater the rod 'cause of the de-lam. Jay Edwards |
