Paul H. Young Midge: 6'3", absolute favorite, superb rod, does everything, DT4 line.
Orvis Rocky Mountain: 6'6", 3-pc. portability, not terribly expensive, casts well with DT5 line.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
465 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Not a maker, but a taper. I have a 6 1/2 footer based on the Dickerson 6611 taper. It's a wonder with a 4 weight line.

"In the realm of a medium or medium/fast."
For less than $1,000 (usually) Pre 1970 Orvis Rocky Mountain Orvis Deluxe Orvis Superfine Jim Beasley's PHY renditions. quashnet mentioned his PHY Midge, and I 100% agree! If money is a consideration, try Beasley's rendition of that rod. and lots of others which I don't own- but wish I did!! Finally, if you can cast the rod before you buy, by all means you should do that. Have fun! Tom |

Mike Brooks Midge, don't recall if it's designed as a 3wt or a 4wt.
This signature left intentionally blank.

I make different versions for a 2, 3 and 4 wt. The most popular is the 3 wt version.

I have to say I have really enjoyed fishing the Orvis Flea. I fish it with a WF3, but it sounds like most Flea users here prefer the 4 wt that Orvis lists it
at. At least with the 3 it's pretty fast, and has a lot more muscle than you'd expect.

I love small rods. A Summers 6'6" 3/4wt is very nice. Kusse makes a faster action in either 6 or 6'6". The nicest 6' rod I ever owned was
a Carlson 6' 3wt and would not hesitate to order either a 6' or 6'6" from him which would be a bit quicker than Sam's.

I'll agree with the suggestion for the Orvis Rocky Mountain. I bought mine from a forum member, and absolutely covet it.

I'll have to throw in the Payne 96 taper. I've made all 3, Young's Midge, Dickerson's 6611 and Payne's 96 and have come to like the 96
best. No disparagement to the others, all are fine rods and a joy to use, the 96 just happens to suit me a little better than the other 2. I have one in the
classifieds here.

I have an older Orvis Flea and a 6'6" DeLuxe. On small tight creeks they are just the ticket.
I might succumb to the urge to own a 6611 at some point. Flyslinger, that is a lovely set up. The old dark Orvis rods are too gorgeous; that old reel isn't too shabby either. |

Anyone have a favorite 6 or 6 1/2... | #17 | ||

I have a 6'-6", 3/2, for a four weight on a taper by Wayne Cattanach. It was the second rod that I made, and I absolutely love it. Most of the time
I fish it with at DT5 line because I mainly fish it on small streams. It has a quick action and plenty of backbone. That little rod does everything that I
ask it to do. If you like a short rod, I highly recommend this taper.

Thramer's version of the Dickerson 6611. He adds a swell in the butt which is a little different than others (I think) and it is a wonderful small stream
rod.

Just got today a 6'6" 2 1/2 oz Winston (early Twin Bridge) ... realy worth the money, can't wait to fight a fish with in
some little Britany creeks I know.

I have a similar configuration, 6'6, 3/2, but lighter, a DT3. It's a true medium taper, intended for the easy load, the gentle cast, but it's also
very accurate. It was made in 1996 by a fellow on this board, Royal something-or-other, dude in Lyons, CO. Heard he's made a few sticks in his time.
I once thought it good only for tiny trout. It's acutally fished a lot of places and has taken trout to 18". It excels on casts of only the leader, to a very sweet zone of 15' -- 25'. That's all I need on the small stream. Am bringing it back to Colorado for August conclave. Going to show it to the maker, see if he recognizes it. |
