This indeed must be a very rare rod. I own a Heddon Featherlite #31 made for Abbey and Imbrie and would really like to see some pictures
of the Lincoln Model #1 for comparison. Any one? Bob |

Bob Summers gave the rod a varnish dip several years ago and the cork is original as are the wraps.

shakeylee wrote:Wm. Mills & Son was a famous tackle company in New York, which in the 1870s acquired the stock and became the owner of the H.L. Leonard Rod Co., never changing its name. The Mills people came from Redditch, England. Mills also marketed some outstanding all-German silver reels and first-rate raised-pillar reels including the Crown and the famous Leonard-Mills bi-metals. A convincing argument can be made it was the most important of all fly- fishing tackle companies in the U.S. |

Heddon Trade Rod | #27 | ||

I picked up a Heddon Bob Hall De luxe recently. 8" 6" 3/2 5wt 2f. I'm interested in knowing as much as possible about it. I'm in the middle
of stripping the finish because it was in meltdown mode.
If anybody has info as to which model it corresponds with, quality of the taper and any history I would appreciate it. If you have one you fish I would like to hear about your set up preferences too. I have some photos but I can't seem to link to them from my Yuki account. Do you have to set up a separate photobucket account? Here's a link to my original post in the Appraisals/ID forum: http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/26569 Thank you, Frank Stevens |

Frank, yes, you have to set up a separate Photobucket account. Then upload your pictures there. From the "account" tab at the top of the page here
at Yuku (you need to log in here to see the "account" tab), go down to the "Settings" section where you'll see "Photobucket"
and that will give you the ability to link your Photobucket account to your Yuku account.
Hope this helps... Bob

I also had trouble uploading photos when using the MAC SAFARI browser. Try the Firefox browser (free) and the appropriate icon will appear for the uploading.
Just a thought. DR

Frank,
I also have a Bob Hall Deluxe and the same length etc. as yours. It's in a state of restorus interruptus at the moment. I don't have my Heddon book handy but I believe these were made for a sporting goods store in Philadelphia. Michael Sinclair guesstimated that these are probably equal to the Heddon #20 grade. |

The William Mills catalogs that had Leonard and Payne rods, Perfects, old bootfoot waders (somehow, there was life before breathable waders) and ,on occasion, stories by Schweibert (one memorable one the Hendricksons) make for great re-reads in the offseason. |

Dr & Bob,
Thanks, firefox went smooth and I now am officially in the "bucket". Greg thanks for the info. Have you ever fished yours? Mine was so melted it's getting a rehab first. Well, dum diddee dum. Here it is. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
I'll have good light soon. I'll post some finished with the stripping pics later. It turned out really well. Anybody have a ballpark on value. Doesn't really matter. I'm keeping her. Just wonder if I got in too "strong" or "just about right".

nice rod | #33 | ||

very nice rod, it will be a beauty when you have refinished it for sure. I love that Classic Era reelseat...for some reason, I really like the Heddon trade
rods as much as the standard issue...they seem to have a uniqueness that to me is desirable...but for some reason not the W&McG trade rods, like the
Marshall Fields Stripers, just a personal preferance...I have collected several Folsoms and Jay Harvey's that are beautiful examples of Heddon work...I
don't know why, but I have been able to collect more Featherweights (i.e. 8' 0 3/4F 2/2) and Extra Light (i.e 8'-1 1/2F 3/2) in the trade
rods...maybe they are just sold more and the Heddon's are kept in collections but in the light trout series, my trade rods out number my Heddon's by 2
to 1...as far as value, since it will be refinisheded/restored (not original) or whatever the forum has agreed that definition is, I have seen them range from
$250 to $450 depending on whether people feel the second tip is a replacement or original, being of a different shade of color in the pics...and in my personal
experience, for example, I am willing to pay a bit more for Folsom's than for L&C since that's what I have more of but that's just my 2 cents
and is not a rule. I sold a 8 1/2' L&C for $160 that the buyer (a well known forum member) then turned around and resold to the same audience a month
later for $480. Whether it was because of his reputation as a dealer or my unknown "who dat?" status that maybe affected the price, as it was sold
just as I sold it even with my hand lettered tag still on the tube, my opinion is that he fortuitously found the guy who just had to have it to flesh out a
hole in a collection, it can be just that and sometimes only that...price is subjective...dj

Thank you for your comments.
The tip is original I believe. The different color is because I had already started to strip the "varnish meltdown" for a thread in the restoration & Id forum when they asked for before and after pics. So I shot these showing the difference between them. I have since finished the strip but have not refinished it yet. The cork handle had the shiny grey/black finish you see in so many pics from hand sweat and fish slime.
I appreciate your value estimation. That gives me something to go on. I feel I did ok with it. Bought a Rio "bluegill" designated line for it yesterday and hope to finish the rod and throw a spider out there soon on a local lake and try it out. Thanks again, Frank |
