Anyone out there have a good taper for a 9 1/2 to 10 foot, WF6F line? I'm looking at making a switch rod that I can conventionally cast or spey cast
streamers. Thanks.

There is a "taper exchange" section on the board you might get more mileage there.
I seem to remember that Milward's book has some longer tapers, I would want a shortened spey taper not a single-handed taper lengthened but that's my taste, I just like spey casts with softer tapers. You are probably going to want to hollow that rod and maybe a 3-pc will make a lot of sense (otherwise your strips will have to be really long). Even hollowbuilt I think you are probably looking at a 6 to7 oz rod (guessing) but anyway it will be heavy, overheads are going to wear our your shoulder. An interesting concept though one of these days I'll have to give a longer taper like that a go. I have a 13'4" 5/6 graphite loomis 2-hander, I've caught everything from 14" trout to 11 pound steelhead on it, it's one application where I think graphite has a big edge over bamboo, but I'd love to be proven wrong. You might want to check into the Rio Outbound line I think it might work really well for what you are intending to do, I use a modified windcutter spey but that's with a much longer rod so you will need a shorter head. Good luck.

I'm not trying to be funny, but have you considered graphite? Seems to me that the lighter and stiffer graphite materials work quite well for long, light
rods.

canerodscom wrote:Hi Harry, I do have several graphite spey rods. The one I'm looking to build will only be 9 1/2 to 10 feet long for trout in my local Catskill rivers, so it need not be a heavy clunker. I was thinking of hollowing the butt section under the grip and reel seat. |
